Ok...Obviously, this isn't for my '79, but I thought it'd be a good place to ask anyway
Is there an easy way to tell if a 2003 or newer vehicle uses OBDII protocols, or if it may use CAN protocols? Trying to decide which diagnostic comp. to buy. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
why would this be" a good place to ask"? most of these guys are worried about voiding the warranty when they put aftermarket wheels on the car! just because they bought a vette does'nt mean they "know" anything about cars
The systems are still technically considered OBDII but incorporate CAN. The best one you could get is the identical one used by the dealerships, the Tech2. Now the bad part. They're high, around $3000 used in good shape with the latest software. I've been waiting for the price to drop myself.
The protocols and diagnostics will vary by vehicle and maker. Do you have a specific post 2003 car that you would like to know about? You posted this on the Corvette forum but I don't want to assume that you are referring to a 2003 or newer Corvette.
The 2005-2009 (sixth generation) Corvette for example uses the CAN-BUS so you will need to get a CAN capable reader.
The 2004 Corvette was the first to require the CAN protocol. In 2003 it was not CAN capable.

Since you didn't answer his question can we then surmize then that you know nothing about cars either? You went to great trouble to open this thread, read the question and then make a gross generalization about members of this site that you seemingly contribute very little to. Maybe we all can learn something from you? So please, enlighten us.
