Default Painting fuel rail covers

With all the new spray paints for plastics, has anyone tried painting their fuel rail covers? Seems like you could paint them, spend $25 for letter decals, and have a nice set for far less than buying them. I don't have a spray gun, so it would have to be a can spray paint.

I did mine with one can of Titanium Silver Rust Oleum "Universal" spray paint. Just cleaned the plastic with solvent first. Then coated with clear after the paint. Then painted the letters red with a small brush, and removed excess paint around the edges of the letters with paint thinner. They were off the car for 2 days and about $10...after six months they look great and the Titanium Silver is a good match for Machine Silver.

I had mine done by a local body shop. It's all in the prep and the type of finish you want. A spray can might be good for an OK finish. If you want super glossy and smooth, let the professionals handle it.

Default Painted Fuel Rails...

When my 09 JSB Coupe was getting close to arriving this past September I made arrangements with the dealerships body shop to paint the Fuel Rails to match the car. The quote/estimate was $100. When the car came in they went to order the paint and wow, the estimate went out of sight. They told me the materials would be over $300 alone. Then there was the issue of whether the new paint would adhere to the Fuel Rails. Needless to say, I bought from a Forum Vendor for a lot less. I say just leave it to the people that do this for a living. Just too many unknowns...

Painted mine with Rustolem. No problems and I am AZ. I primed with gray and used red. I like the smoothy finish better so I will replace later with those.

If you want a smooth finish shoot them with a filler primer before painting.

If you spray paint them with rattle cans you will most likely end up with a textured, low gloss, poor quality finish. Some CF folks dont mind the textured, semi-glossy appearance, i personally dislike how that looks. People are able to tell that you painted the parts in your garage.

If you want them to look slick, glossy and smooth like your cars paintjob, take them to a good paint shop and they'll know exactly what to do with them. It takes A LOT of sanding, smoothing, primering and technique to get the covers 100% texture free before they can be painted.

After they are painted you can buy the "CORVETTE" offsets directly from GM. The cheap vynil stickers you can buy on wee-bay are a pain to install, they dont look quite right and they peel off with engine heat.

Nice touch with the red accent stripe. How does that look from a far away shot on the car?

Another alternative is powdercoating. A very smooth finish for a lower cost than smoothies. I charge 200 plus shipping to powdercoat yours. (lettering extra). Since the powdercoat actually fuses to the plastic, they are also guaranteed never to peel.

I painted mine with clear. Now you can see right through them like they are not even there. Some people like looking at plastic covers, I personally like looking at the engine!

Heres an example of what can be done in your garage. They are nice and shinny just like the paint on the car. They do have the texture because i didnt care if it had it or not, it would be somewhat simple to take away the texture, just some sanding and primer. It is alot cheaper then having them done, and knowing you did it your self when someone says wow those look great where did you get them. These have been on for 4 months and look the same as the day they were done.

I painted mine with Rustoleum for plastic. They are almost 2 years old and look just like the day I painted them.

Hey Al,

I can't remember where I got the letters. It was from one of the vendors here on the forum. I will try and find out and PM you.
