And I'll bet that they don't sell remote starters up there either. Now that the C6 has taken the Cadillac's garage space, the remote start is one of my favoite cold and warm weather options. K9 cars here are all equiped as to allow AC to run during warm months. Guess I'll have to warn them not to attend any dog competitions up there. Seriously though, I'd not recomend doing this on an urban st. but at the end of my 100' suburban drive, well... To the OP: thanks for the tip. prob. won't use it, but nice to konow. Don't let the nay sayers get you down. They've never exceeded a posted speed limit or never ever put two black marks on a roadway, removed their targa top etc. Sometimes wonder why they bought a Corvette. Lighten up guys, we're here to share our joy over our cars, and learn. Not to be scolded at every turn.
I don't think the OP meant that he was going to leave it running for 1/2 hour in a mall parking lot.
I had never tried this prior to today but what I found out (I have never read about this so far) that if you leave the car running and exit with the FOB - you can press the "lock" button on the FOB, walk away, and no one will be able to get into the car while it is running.
If you don't press "lock" then the door remains unlocked and someone can take your baby for a joy ride.
Now I don't profess leaving your car running and going into a store, but it is handy to know in case you need to run in for a second to grab something. I know that I'll be using this from now on.
In Canada (Ontario) it is 8 demerit points and potential loss of licencei for "not having control of your vehicle". With or without keys. In years gone by people would pull over on the side of the highway to have a nap just to be safe if they had been driving for a long time. If you leave do this in Ontario, take the keys out of the ignition as the same 8 points are coming your way.
that's good to know. I actually wondered as I have to warm mine up due to cold weather plus I like to run it to charge the battery up.
thanks!
Idling your car will not charge up your battery. These cars must be driven at speed for quite awhile to get any type of decent charge into the battery. Get a battery tender and save yourself a lot of grief...

I knew someone would mention this. I've been waiting.
not sure about canadian laws, but in N Y state a vehicle left running and unattended will get you a ticket for unattended motor vehicle, not a good idea to leave any vehicle running, for whatever reason....
BUT, my Malibu has remote start. Great when I lived in Wisconsin in the winter. I'm just saying...

I think the factory remote starts required that the car be locked, and it leaves the steering column and shifter locked until the key is put in the ignition.
When you just lock the car with it running, is the shifter and steering wheel still unlocked??
I had my car washed today and left the key fob in the center console. Somehow the car locked and I had to go hoem to retrieve the second fob to open it... anyone know how the car could be locked with the fob inside?
Mine is set to automatically lock whether the key fob is in there or not. It can be set to honk 3 times as a reminder that you left it in the car so that you can quickly go back and retrieve it, but it sounds like you might have this option turned off?
Every once in a while, I realize that I forgot something in the house after starting my car. I now know I can lock it, run in the house to get what I forgot, then comeback out and unlock it.
I think it's a nice feature and I've used it for the same exact scenario rather than shut off the car (which I realize would be the safest thing to do). However, I wouldn't ever use it in a mall or parking lot to go in to a store, etc.; that's just asking for a broken window and a stolen Vette, or even a ticket/tow!
The biggest issue is WASTING GAS. For crying out loud, stop it.It is just plain dumb, that's what starters are for.
Even in the winter. don't do it.Cars don't need to be 'warmed up'. Start and go. Simple.
My guess would be, someone found out you can do something with
your car by just messing around. I think alot of people are like this when they find a little something, like an "Oh wow, I never knew this "
they want to tell a few people.
It maybe not that big of a deal, but hey, like someone said, "It's kinda if you have to let the car warm up for a few while you run back into the house for a second."
That's just my opinion.... Okay, were all a kid at heart.
If you lock the door with the engine running, would the alarm go off if someone broke the window and used the inside button to open the door?
Would that also kill the engine?
Someone could test by simply leaving the window open instead of breaking it. I'd do it myself but mine is in the shop today.
