Default 2005 verse 2009

I have the 2006 A6 Z-51. Since two other cars are standard shift, my wife pleaded with me to get an automatic so that she could drive the vette if I ever saw a reason for her to get in it. So I caved and got the paddle shift. Living in DC area, the traffic is aweful, and the auto tranny is good for those problems. However, I have the auto F1 in my F360 and I don't like it as much as I like the dual paddle shift in the vette. This dual clutch A6 is awesome. It shifts quickly and you can use either hand to shift up or down which is huge if you are drinking a drink or talking on the phone, etc. It is smooth compared to the BMW and I am glad that GM provided the ability to shift up or down with either hand. The only better auto shifting tranny is the new Porsche PDK. By the way, I when it was stock, I did a 12.71 / 115 mph 1/4 mile at Budds Creek with this A6 which is decent for being stock.
If money is driving this decision, then I would recommend the 2006 over the 2005 for the tranny and rear-end and steering wheel and wart.
The price between an 05 vs. 06 should be fairly close. Later Mods to the car will enhance it enough to be competitive with the 08/09.
Good hunting and continue to do your homework prior to jumping in the ring.

Would not give up my 05 mellow yellow for the steering wheel which
can be always changed. I ordered the larger rear end at time of purchase.

The biggest changes happened in 2008 Powertrain, Steering and interior upgrades. Bluetooth still not on 1sb for 09.

It depends on what you want to do with the car. I had the cash and the option to buy 07 Z at the time of purchasing my car but anything stock is boring to me and I wanted to build up the 05 instead. I am so glad I went that route!

A major difference in MSRP. A loaded 1SB '05 would have been about $6,000 cheaper than a new loaded '09 3LT.

400 hp should be plenty. I don't need paddle shifts. Is it possible to get an aftermarket steering wheel with radio controls for the '05?

What's roof delam?
Just my personal opinion, I purchased a 2005 with 8000 miles on back in July, I've been itching to get a new model since the prices have been great lately. I paid cash for mine which is great a new would leave some payoff. I have to say I decided I love my 2005, and for a few upgrades just wasn't worth it. Mine is in pristine condition and the upgrades I really like on the newer models, I've just bought and done. New 2008 console, radio *****, DSvettes console, shift/ebrake handles and boots, new CCW rims and the wart thing that most get so hung up on give me a break. If you find the right one you'll just love it and have more money in your pocket.

The A6 is NOT a"dual clutch". It's just an Automatic Transmission with a Torque Converter just like the A4. The big difference is 6 speeds instead of 4 for better control and mileage.

The "Paddle Shift" is more of a advertizing gimmick than an improvement. It's just a change on the way the driver selects the gear. Over 50 years ago the only choice for gear selection on an Auto trans was a lever on the steering column, then the "advance" to a lever on the console (or in a few isolated cases a lever or push buttons on the dash) now the paddles on the steering wheel for the A6.
