So,let me see if I get this right......You want to "talk" the DMV into issuing only one plate so that when you get pulled for no front tag you can go to court & blame the DMV....is that correct?
A much easier course of action would be to simply get a flip up tag frame....one of the forum vendors here carries them.
Yes, because the vehicle code of California allows for them to give out one plate. The law came into effect in 2004. I don't think they realize it.
Plus we can prove that the factory delivered the Vette without a front plate. The "official" GM solution is a plate holder with an adhesive backing. Id further argue that you cannot safely secure that on the front. What happens when the plate holder comes lose and comes flying off, on highway and in an accident?
If a license plate bracket was "safe" GM would have delivered them from the factory with them. The car has a plate that says car at time of manufacture meets federal safety standards. With that adhesive plate would it not make it no longer meet standard.
I should start a defense fund and for a class action suit. California wants us to drive un safe cars. If it was a hybrid or electric bet the DMV would just give one plate!
California Vehicle code 5200. (a) When two license plates are issued by the department for use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.
(b) When only one license plate is issued for use upon a vehicle, it shall be attached to the rear thereof , unless the license plate is issued for use upon a truck tractor, in which case the license plate shall be displayed in accordance with Section 4850.5.
Amended Sec. 27, Ch. 594, Stats. 2003. Effective January 1, 2004.

I've had my C6 for about 20 months. Never displayed a front plate. I pass LEOs daily and never had a problem. I also have 360° blackouts, no problems either. I have even been pulled over and got a warning for "aggressive driving" and the (female) police officer did a walk around, saw the blackouts and single plate and said nothing.
I am of the opinion that it depends on the city you're in, the attitude of the officer and of course your attitude.

For some reason Police really love me. Had a Porsche 928S4 and car came with no bracket on the front. Got loads of no front plate tickets.
This all started because one dealer installs them as part of dealer prep. Ruins the car. I want to see if anyone has talked the DMV into issuing just one plate.............. More fun to have a good attitude and go to court be within the law and win trial.............
I'm thinking about getting a 08-Z06 and having some trouble with the dealers in California. Have a simple question that at least the sales people I've spoken with can't seem to answer. I do not want to put a front license plate on the car. Yes, I realize this is California vehicle code in relevant part that:
(b) says if only one plate is issued you only have to have it displayed on the rear. As GM intended and complied with Federal Safety regulations at time of manufacture.
So is it possible to get the DMV to issue you only one plate?
One dealer the girl who does registration and plates for customers refused to check into this. Dealer installs bracket to comply with California "law". All the sales people I've talked with say the same thing.
So how many tickets for no front plate do California people get? Cause I plan on fighting every single one of them!
CA VC also states that:
Don't put it on and see what happens..but I think it is the law.
I really don't know but I suspect the law you are refering to is for "vehicles" like travel trailers and regular trailers where only one plate is given to be put on the rear only because they are always attached to another vehicle.
I doubt if you could get only one plate for an automobile.

I purchased mine from Community Chevrolet in Burbank. They had at least 20 Corvettes on the lot and none of them had front license plates installed. At the time of purchase they informed me of the laws and asked me if I wanted them to install it or if they should just give me the hardware for future use. I've been driving it all over So. Cal for the past 7-8 months with not problems.
I don't run the front plate on 5 of my cars, 2vetts, MB,SSR, camaro since 1994. I have gotten one ticket
@ the beach from a meter maid. LEO"s eyeball the cars all the time, but I never have a problem.
Ted
I don't run with a front plate on. I did not have the front plate holder installed by the dealer.
The one plate issue deals with trailers and motorcycles.
Minnesota is a pain that way - now - I never ran a front plate on any of my previous corvettes but 2 hours after I picked up the new one, I got the $75 ticket. I bought the front bracket from these guys - color matched great and looks as good as it can. Nice folks to deal with.
You're gonna get two plates. The single plate code is referring to motorcycles, trailers etc. Most Corvettes I see do not have the front plate on. Live dangerously!
I have gotten 3 or 4 but they were all in the mustang I had. They usually will not stop you for no plate but if they stop you for something else then they will usually add that on top of it.
Call Tim @ BoardWalk, a forum vendor, he will save you many, many thousands and they will put the factory bracket in the storage well in the back. I bought mine thru him as many others have. Catch a plane to the SF airport and they will pick you up and you drive home a couple of hours later. I did that when I was living in Upland, CA.

You won't find a better deal. If your really going to buy one give Tim a call. As far as the front plate goes I haven't had one on my Camaro or my Vette for YEARS, no problems.
I was pulled over by a female statey (total ****, sorry but she was) for not having the front plate on. I was respectful even though she kept cutting me off mid-sentance when I was trying to talk. No ticket though, just a "Courtesy Warning." What I thought was hilarious is she said "you need to have a front license plate just like every other Corvette owner." I had to bite my lip to not laugh. And what made that even funnier was that I drove off and no more than two minutes later, I saw a C4 driving the opposite direction with no front plate and all I could think to myself was "...yeah...just like every other Corvette owner, gimme a break." Stupid law in my opinion. Still don't have the front plate on and probably won't ever. I think it looks terrible. The only thing I would ever consider is putting on one of those retractable plates with the wireless remote control.

I've had an 85,86,90,00, and 06 Corvette, all in CA and I've driven them a lot.
I've only gotten one ticket, in 1984, for no front plate. It was from a Livermore city officer. I asked him if it was a slow day and he laughed and said "yeah". We chatted for awhile and I left. It was only a "fix it" ticket back then so I put the plate on, got the tickeet signed off, and took the plate off again. Otherwise, I've never gotten a ticket for it iin 24 years.
I signed nothing with my CA dealer about not installing the front license plate bracket when we bought our 08 vet in Nov, 2008. I have driven many cars in CA in the last 40+ years and nearly all of them had no front plate. Currently, I drive 3 cars in CA, none with the front plate, and to date I've had only 1 fix-it ticket issued to me, and that was probably 15-20 years ago. I will probably buy the removable front bracket shortly, so I will be ready, should I get a ticket in the vet.
I did get pulled over in the vet, by a Santa Ana, CA motorcycle officer, during the second week of owning the car, for NO plates. Once he realized I had just purchased the car and the plates had not been issued yet, he gave me a verbal reminder to install "them" when I received the plates. Still no front plate installed and no tickets!
