Go buy your friend a 12 pack of his favorite beer, because he just improved your quality of life and time spent enjoying your vette, not just washing it (though that is part of the enjoyment).
I come from the same school...however, I love my California Duster. Great product and keeps your ride looking like you just detailed it for days (even weeks depending on the weather).
I have used one for about 12 years and have never experienced scratches from it. I'm sure on some microscopic level it might be, but not that you will ever notice.
The key is to let it glide. Do not press down in any fashion. I usually let gravity hold it down and pull up a little...let the strands glide and you'll be fine and not to mention you'll be a happy camper with a clean car and a lot more time on your hands.
Final observation: Look who owns the California Dusters. It's not the guys picking up hanging air freshners, spinners, beef jerky and those crome lady profiles for their mud flaps at the local AutoZone. It's people who take great care of their cars. This product would not have lasted this long on the market with this crowd if it did not do what it said it would do without damage to the finish.

Maybe I was using the duster in a wrong matter, because I hated them, I dont know if i pressed a little to hard I got some oil streks from the oil protecter thats on the duster. Did you when first bought it turn it over and let stand on a newspaper for a couple of days. You also said you let the strands on the duster just hit the paint on the car and pull up when dusting? Thanks for your help.

Use them on a cold car and just swipe it lightly across the surface. If the cars metal is hot the wax in the cloth will leave wax marks on the surface.
I have used these on Harley's and my Vettes for years and the machine is better off getting a dusting than washes all the time. Especially bikes!

Been using them for years. Ever since I discovered GM people using them on show cars.
By the way, make sure it is the REAL CALIFORNIA DUSTER.....not the imitation that many cheapy auto stores and some Wally's sell. There is a big difference.

I recieved a California Duster for Christmas from a friend. I have been really reluctant to use it. I was brought up old school where you didn't touch your car before a good rinsing off with plenty of water and then only with a wet sponge.
Well I just noticed a slight dust film on the car and thought what the heck I'll try the duster.
I didn't notice any marks or scratches in the garage lighting, but I still have to check it in bright sunlight, before I can recommend it.
I certainly wouln't use it for anything other than light dust, but it did save getting the hose out.

I read many different opinions on this topic, but my experience was that it streaked my black Vette significantly. I washed it it the washing machine and let it dry and got rid of the wax or whatever it was in the fibers and now I use it all the time with no problems! Good luck and happy driving!!!

Poll Results
I counted 27 positive California Duster responses to only 4 negative.
It must be okay based on some of the long time use claims on some of the posts.

I've been using them for years. Use on my Vette, my Harley and my Black Jeep.
By the way, saw people using them on on some of the high zoot cars at Barrett-Jackson yesterday.
Make that 28 to 4 positive responses!

I have been using them for many years, and I have only bought 2 and I still have the same 2 and I still use the same 2. I have never had a problem with them scratching the finish but I do use them as instructed, just to get a daily layer of dust off of the vehicles and I do not use pressure. Works well for me!

I've been using them for years too & that's mainly after a ride & the car gets dusty. I lightly dust everything, then detail any parafin streaks before covering it. Now, I see they make one for doing wheels so next time I'm at the auto-parts store I'll get one.

Mike, let us know your results if you get it. If it works as well as their original duster on the car, then I would probably like to try the model for the wheels as well.
BTW, Larry, add one more positive response for the duster.

When you buy a new Duster, lay it on a couple of newspapers for 24 hours so they can absorb any excess "wax" from the Duster...After that youre ready to go....Keep your Duster in it's protective carrying cover when not in use...It will keep it from drying out and will ablso keep it clean

I have over 20 years experience with dusters and recommend them.
I have used them on 3 Vettes a 97 SS Camaro and my prize winning 91 Black 454SS pick up show truck !
No problems.

I've been using it for years. I think there is more of a risk of swirls by washing the car too often; one grain of sand on a washing mitt can make hundreds of swirls or even scratches. Same with drying after washing.

Okay Larry.
Seriously, I've used the California Duster on my Monterey Red with no apparent problems. I don't use it any more than absolutely necessary though and am careful.
