I have an 08 stock coupe with about 6000 miles. Since almost the beginning I have had a slight brake squeal when stopping. Dealer says this is normal. What does the forum say?
it is not unusual for many cars, not just the Corvette. many things you can do, short of changing brake pads, such as bedding them in again, putting anti-squeak compound on back of pads, etc. then, there's the more dramatic choice of changing the pads to some other compound. Z51-equipped cars sometimes have more brake noise. a little is ok by me; a lot is not.
Has anybody found an effective anti-squeal compound or add-on pad that actually worked, and you would recommend?
I'm using track/autocross pads on the street, and they do squeal embarrassingly - ALL the time. But they work so well that I refuse to take them off...
Yes, that is what the dealer does say. I don't care if it is common or not it is still very very annoying. I got rid of this problem many many years ago by going with ceramic. I have not thought of this problem in all the years since. Was absolutely the best thing I did for this car and I am grateful every single day to have them.
Before someone comes on and says it, they aren't really so good for the track if that is what you want. If, however, you don't track the car then I can think of no good reason not to get them. I have not had a stopping distance issue with them in all the years I've had them on.
I had a very bad squealing problem with my 08 Z51. The dealer put on GM ceramic brake pads front and rear when the car had only 300 miles on it. The pads had a anti squeal shim on them. No more squealing problems and less brake dust.
I put on Delco Dura Stop ceramic pads, Z51 option. The stock pads never made noise but they were too dusty for me. The ceramics have no squeal and are very clean. Got them from Gene Culley.
