Default CAGS? Fuse version or plug-in model

I am considering the Shift Eliminator for my 08 M6 and have seen two diffrent versions. One was a simple fuse the plugs into the fusebox under the hood and the other plugs in to the harness going to the transmission in the rear. It seems that the fuse model is the easiest with not having to lift the car etc. If the fuse is used what OE fuse is pulled and does it affect anything by using shift eliminator fuse? Is there a benefit of using the harness type over the fuse? I know the experts on here will weigh in with a good answer!

I just used the Radio Shack resistor that plugged into the transmission harness; easy, reliable, and inexpensive. I don't really know the difference between the fuse method and the transmission method.

Do a search on the CAGS resistor and you will find many posts on what to buy, how to do it, etc. This forum is AWESOME for stuff like that!

I just ordered the fuse from another thread (Corvette Mods?) at 30% off - works out to be free shipping. For under $20 signed, sealed, and delivered, seems like the best plug-n-play bargan of the year so far.

I have been using the fuse method for several months. The skip shift light still comes on, but it does not force you into 4th gear. It works perfectly. The fuse costs about $2.00. Checkout this link.

I purchased the SmartGlo fuse, blew it and plugged it in. It works great. (around $4 for two at AutoZone.)

Hmmmm ......

Thanks! I think I'll cancel the order I just made and go to Auto Zone. Less money and no waiting!

Thanks, guys.

I use the module that plugs in by the transmission. $30 bucks, or something, from Mid America (but other vendors sell same thing). The light comes on but the CAGS doesn't engage.

Thats all you gotta do? Just blow the fuse and plug er in?

Has anyone accomplished this mod on a 09? My 01 was a PITA at times with the 1st to 4th issues.

Does it matter what amp rating fuse you purchase?

Yup, just blow it and put it in. (Make sure it's the SmartGlow fuse, not some generic fuse )
Try reading the whole thread by leres.
The fuse method is doing exactly what other devices achieve, and with a very simple solution.

Basically, the small LED that lights up after the SmartGlow fuse is blown draws just about the right current to make the car think the solenoid is still in tact. hench, no DTC.
So amp rating doesn't matter. But I still bought the 10 amp red one.
Leres is a genius.

Can you believe there's an fleabay seller that sells this blown fuse for like $16?

Dan

Tried to find the fuses on autozone but struck out. Typed in smart glo and smart glow but it yielded nada.

Are these the same fuses from fleabay:

One final question, this are the regular sized fuses and not the minnie, correct?
PS: Has anyone tried this on a 09 yet?

I have the fuse, works great! Got it from a fellow forum member, but I think he got it from southercarparts.com. Here is a link with directions on what fuse to pull.

Keep it simple - use the fuse! It's a no brainer - especially when you see all the work required for the one that works through the transmission...

Yeah, it was really tough. Backed up on the ramps, unplugged the cable, plugged in the thingy into the cable, installed the dust shield on the trans, backed off the ramps. Done. Oh - it took me 30 minutes but I had to drink a couple of beers in the process. Yes, the fuse does sound easier but the trans method is not a lot of work as you said.

I have one on my '09 Z06, bought from oh oh oh OReilly
$2.99 for a 2 pack, blew it with an olf ups battery in my garage. Been on since October 2008. Amp ratting does not matter although the factory fuse is a red 10amp. Works great!
