Just got my 2008 Z51 back from the dealer today, it will not go into reverse without badly grinding. There is a TSB out for this and the TSB has instructions for the dealer to call a specific person at GM (they gave me a copy). I left my car there for a full 7 days, and the guy from GM never called the dealership back. So they gave me the car back, it still has the issue. Nothing has been fixed.
I think this is ridiculous. They have to wait for 1 person in GM to talk to them before they can fix this problem?? WTF!?! BTW, the TSB doesn't say anything other than that it affects 08-09 C6 cars with the tremec manual gearbox (Base & Z06), and that the problem is the car grinds when going into reverse. The workaround is to put it in first, roll forward a few inches or so, then slip it into reverse. Then it says GM wants information about these cars and to call this guy (name & ph num listed) for more info on what to do. I'm annoyed my car was there for 7 days and they didn't do jack..
Did the car just start to do this or has it worked OK for a while?
It's unfortunate that the guy at GM didn't call back, but even more disturbing that YOUR dealership wasn't on the phone daily trying to get a hold of him or hounding the Corvette tech guys for an answer.
so what's next for you/your car? will the dealer be getting back to you sometime soon after this guy from GM calls back? maybe he's no longer employed there....
In my experience, you don't even need to roll forward at all in first gear. Just put it in first and barely let out the clutch and reverse should then be fine.....kind of a PITA, but it worked for me. Most transmissions use second gear as the reverse gears, so second works even better for the above procedure. Still in all, you should not have to do this -- keep in mind that the fix is surely going to mean pulling the drive train out of the rear of the car-- don't go to the dealer and even look at your car in this stage of disassembly -- not a pretty sight! ---- everything from the torque tube back is laying on the ground.....
As a back up plan --- you could TRY Redlline or Royal Purple trans fluid as this has helped others with this glitch.......good luck in whatever you decide!

Could you post the tsb or the link I have not been able to find it!!
No grinding, but my 06 manual wouldn't go into reverse.
Here's what the dealer did, right from the invoice:
"Disassembled trans found reverse gear binding on main shaft. Replaced reverse gear, bearings, synchro and fork."
They also cleaned it all up and checked the other synchros.
Fortunately all covered under warranty. That would have been one BIG bill!

It just started to do this. I bought it new now it has about 8000 miles on it.

Well they said they will call me and let me know when they hear from this guy. But they were just so matter of fact about the whole thing (the dealership) that I don't think I'll bring the car back to them. The guy called me mid-week to tell me they were waiting for a call back from this guy and that he hadn't called yet. So I suggested, rather than wait days and days (by this time 3 days had already passed since they left a msg for him), they should contact his supervisor at GM and see what the story is.. Like you say, perhaps he is a casualty of the recent goings on at GM. But the service advisor commented to me "thats not really my job". Reallly annoyed me that he said that.. Then he has the nerve to tell me I need to give him a 100% on the survey I am going to get from GM. Screw him.
Do you let you car idle in Neutral (with clutch out)before you try to put it in gear?
Just wondering.
Yes I've tried that too... Only way to get it into reverse smoothly is to roll forward in 1st a few inches first, then go to R. Even just putting it into 1st won't work, have to roll..

I love it when they tell me how to rate their service. I would tell him 'you start out at 0% and work your way up from there based on how good a job you do.......so, where do you think you are at?'
Holy mackerel! Not only do I agree with the last two posts, you really do need to find another dealer. And then maybe talk with the service manager first, and say that he probably needs to get someone involved right away, not in a few days when the mythical man returns to his office or calls back.
agreed... I'll be bringing it to a new dealer tomorrow morning.
And so everyone knows, the dealer that I will not be returning to is Ed Morse Sawgrass Chevrolet in Sunrise, Florida. I do not agree with those posters who don't like to mention who has given them bad service. On the contrary I think we should all share this information with each other so others can read these posts and make informed decisions about whether or not they want to go these dealerships for service or not.
Tomorrow I'll be going to Lou Bachrot Coconut Creek, FL.
