Solve both problems,,,, install a Kenwood 9140 or 8120. Garmin nav built in, plus true 5.1 surround sound, blue tooth to your cell phone, usb ports for Ipod with complete touch pad (8120)or voice control
(9140). 2 external relays can control garage door or house lights. This is what I will do as soon as the 9140 is released by Kenwood next month or so.

8120 retail $1500,,,, cheaper on the auction sites ($1000) but watch out for the certified upgrade units and warrenty. Retail on the 9140 about $2k.

I own an older street pilot model and it works great, I've always been a map reader and compass user and then figured I'd try a GPS. I still carry maps but the advantage of GPS was amazing.

I'll be looking to buy another GPS just for my new Vett in the spring because the street pilot is big, heavy, and the voice function requires the power plugs built in speaker. The big one can stay in my truck.

I'm looking at the Garmin 770 model mounting with a vent or cup mount, anyone have this one and any comments?

I have an 880 and it has voice control, multi leg, MSN direct (which is good really), and cost less than $500. I never mounted it to my windshield as the free cup holder mount works fine. I use the 12V outlet in the center console and the lighter one is still available if I need it. If I need more then two then you just buy a splitter. Sorry, but GM's OEM NAVs are not that good but the Vettes is better then the truck version since it can play CDs at the same time as NAV also.

One of the biggest advantages of a Garmin is that it is portable and can be used in my other two cars.
Absolutely, the price is a big difference. And those that are price sensitive will know what to do. But all built in Navs suffer that same fate.

The voice on the 8xx is ok, but then again, another thingy you need to clip to the steering wheel. And when you take that portable, if you want all those features, you're de-wiring it, or buying extras. There is a convenience to having it in the car with no muss/fuss. No need to move it (either from cup holder or windshield for fear of break-in/theft). Not to mention, the HUD and other things I mentioned before.

Again, it boils down to how you value the different features. I have both, but I've stopped using the Garmin in vette. Do I miss some of the features. Sure. But vice versa when I'm with the garmin in another car and don't have the HUD/nav.

It has you wiring things all about and taking up a power port. It doesn't do searches by telephone number. Doesn't have HUD integration. Doesn't have integrated voice control. Doesn't have dead reckoning (estimating your position even when the Sat. link can't be made). Doesn't offer categories for your save points. The model of garmin you have, I believe, doesn't let you make multileg routes (it lets you add just one way point on to your destination, which in reality is just fine). Doesn't allow you to enter an address by numerous criteria (it forces you to start with the state, then city, then street -- iirc), on the GM I can start with the street, or just click the city and narrow the search results).

Here is all the Garmin has over the built in nav (re GPS features):
1) UI that is WAY easier to pick up.
2) It lets you find POIs on your plotted route.
3) Easy ability to upgrade software.
4) Easy ability to add new points of interest (cameras)
5) On advanced units (not on 760), lane assist.
6) Generally garmin's have the most efficient route determination algorithms (but GM's isn't too bad).
7) Traffic.

That's about it. The GM nav takes an inexcusably long time to get the hang of, but once you do, it has a very deep feature set. What it really needs is decent traffic re-routing. I have a garmin 680 with MSN. The quality of the traffic data just sucks.

As for POIs for cameras and warnings on that, you're much better off with an Escort 9500ci or 9500ix.

Don't get me wrong, the GM nav could use a lot of improvement. But frankly, so can the garmins. The reality is GM's nav makes an AWFUL first impression because the interface is just not easily approachable. But, when you scratch below the surface, it's an ok nav.

So in sum, both have things about them that suck, and both have things about them that are great. Depending on how you value the bits that suck vs. the things that are great, you'll have a different point of view. For my granma, the hurdle of the UI would be too much to deal with, so there, the garmin is a clear winner. For more technically inclined folk, the coolness of HUD integration and voice nav (sans plunger/wire issues) may tip in favor of the GM nav.

BTW, if you do have to get a 3rd party nav, i do think the garmins are still the best. If you want traffic, from what I gather, you want a NON MSN model. As allways, YMMV.
I got my C6 without the NavSystem and my Suburban without the NavSystem. I traded an F-250 that I equipped with a Garmin 660. When I traded the F-250 I kept the Nuvi 660 and now I use it in the Suburban and C6 and on my Street Glide. How much did the Nuvi 660 save me? Lets's see about $900 on the bike and about $1.8K on the C6 and $1.8K on the Suburban, hmm, nearly $4.5K minus about $550 for the Nuvi. The Nuvi was a pretty good choice....

I have an older Magellan 860T it gives street names, and flashes a "DETOUR" sign if my speed goes below 30mph on a freeway or interstate highway..

Its 3 yrs old, and I love it but would like to upgrade to one with a larger screen (4.3) mine is 3.6

But in the past few months there has been many brands and models that have come out..

The Magellan 4350 is $399 but they (Magellan) will sell it to me for $249 if I send in my old one.. (saving about $150)

You guys have any opinion on Garmin vs Tom Tom vs Magellen...
I think I'd like one of the high end units of one of them..

Right now I like Magellan unless someone can suggest why Garmen or TOM TOM is better..

Like one of the above posters said I don't need/want traffic updated, but DO WANT street names, and ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival)

Also I now have 2 mounts one in my DD and one in my C6 and the Magellan just unsnaps and snaps right into the other, no wires to disconnect etc which I like....

Thanks

I have a Garmin 330 and I am looking for an up grade model such as Garmin 765 at Best Buy for $449.99 or the following 765T, 775T or 785T. The more I look the more I get confused as to what the different models do. I am not a tech. geek an it is driving me crazy. Can not find the difference between a 765 and 765T other than price.

I only know the difference between those two are the 765 give directions, the 765T has an extra antenna to get "Traffic" updated on a special frequency..

My Magellan 860T is the same as the 860 .. & I never use the "T" part & I do not want to hook up an extra antenna for the traffic reports..
