SOLD my car 6 months ago and I am thinking of buying a new vette, however I was just doing some reading on the M5 and it sounds awesome?
anybody own both or have owned both that can give me some comparision as to how they perform against each other? Thanks

You should always include what you want to do with the car. M5 is a 4000 lb fast GT car that is expensive to modify. The C6 is a 3300 lb purpose built sports car that can make a lot of power for not a lot of money. Both are sexy but designed for completely different purposes.
If you do get a newer M5, and they are awesome, get the stick not the auto. I have a 01 M5 and I love it, reliable, fast, fun to drive and seats 5. I also love my 08 vert, but as Beatit says they are really different animals.
If I could only have 1 I would take the BMW, it is just better as a DD.
Go test drive them both and get the one you like the best.
I have both a 2006 m5 and a 2005 c6 widebody vert. Two different cars. But the m5 handles like its on rails. 500 horse to start. I would get smg auto its great. If you want luxury performance go with the m5, if you want a sportscar with a harsh ride go vette.

The 6Spd doesn't match the cars engine, IMHO it drives like crap. With that said IF you get a M5 get the SMG BUT don't get one out of warranty because they DO break!!! I think a SMG pump is $4k??
My friend has an '06 M5. It's a heck of a car. I've driven it once, loved the SMG paddles but hated it in an auto. The vette and M5 are too totally different animals. If you want 4 door, get an M5. If you want a dedicated sports car, get the vette.

Honestly not to sound like an A-Hole, If you have to ask the question I say go with the M5.
