Local Accident
Wow... I live near Stony Brook hospital and heard the helicopter come in after 1am... and I was thinking, as I always do, "I wonder who wiped out this time?"... well, that was her. Hope she's ok.
Looks like a Z06... and Supercar tires... hmmm, I wonder if this was another case of someone putting too much faith in the Supercar's ability to hold a cold road surface. Still wonder if this is also what led to the tragedy on the Wantagh Pkwy several weeks ago.
A C6, by design, instills a lot of confidence in terms of cornering / gripping ability. The car handles incredibly well and "feels" like it can do just about anything. You need to remember that the Supercar tires (and even GS2s) will NOT grip in the cold like they do in the warm. And a rear wheel drive 500hp car leaves no room for error, very easy to make a "tiny" mistake which can lead to complete disaster.
I maintain that Corvettes should not be driven by those who are not specifically experienced in high-performance driving... the average person is not going to know or understand anything about high-performance tires being poor in the cold, etc, etc, etc... and it can obviously be VERY dangerous. A training class / course should be required before one is allowed to purchase one of these cars. If it saves even just one life, it would be worth it.

Sorry, just ranting. Something should be done, but the practicality of it would never occur (remember, the government would be involved.....)
Did you guys read the whole article and look at all the pics?
This is the 2nd Z06 she has lost in a year. Last year, her house caught on fire and destroyed her first Z06.
Now this is her second one gone.

Wonder what is was that caused the fire to start. I thought the fuel tanks were pretty well protected. Also, just curious, does the corvette have a deaccelerometer like device that cuts off the fuel pump in the case of a large impact? Or, if the air bags deploy, shouldn't the fuel pump be turned off also?
