Default Curse of the double yellow

Went out for a little cruise--76 degrees, sunshine, newly washed car; all the fixin's for a great time. Spoiled by a Miata. Actually, spoiled by the driver of the Miata. I had to endure 15 miles of uninterrupted double yellow, all the while being tempted by fantastic stretches of bends, curves, changing cambers, grades...But I kept legal and kept a respectful distance--no tailgating. I would have thought the veins starting to pop out of my neck would have been enough to encourage her to pull over, but no. I kept thinking what a waste of a driving opportunity, and what a waste of a car. She just kept chain smoking and driving 20 under the posted speed. I finally just gave up and turned around. Needless to say the return trip was much more fun than the first.

I suggest we organize a petition to allow special passing zones for Corvette drivers. It' not like we need alot of space, right?

I would have found the safest spot to go around her and shown her my taillights!

15 miles...if it were me, I would have went around anyways, double-yellow or not. I mean, everyone passes mopeds on double-yellow, and a miata isn't much different.

Its one of the many derivatives of Murphy's Law...when you want to go fast, someone will be blocking the way.

Last year I drove through Texas with the vette. On two lane roads, I had alot of drivers slow down and pull over to the side to let me pass. This would happen even when I wasn't driving aggressively.

Here in TN, drivers seem to intentionally pull in front of me instead of moving over, even on 4 lane roads.

Texas has road signs that say "Drive friendly"

and they do!

If they were driving the speed limit then probably not, but 20 under? Sorry, but you're history. They are a traffic hazzard and I don't want to be anywhere near them.

I don't care what the road signs say, I can pass when I have the ability to pass. Back in the day (when I was a real stud) I would pass by cutting in to the left on a left turn light. Very aggressive, very illegal, but a lot of fun.

You have more patience than me I would have passed her after a mile double yellow or not. At least you enjoyed the ride back.

even as a social smoker... driving behind someone that's smoking on the road is nasty as hell. I've never smoked in my Z, or my beater S10.

It really sucks when you are trying to enjoy cruising around and you get your cabin smelling like *** despite the fact you've never smoked in it.

Some drivers are totally oblivious, others are inconsiderate. Taken together I think that covers the majority of people on the roads these days.

I don't know if drivers are getting that much worse or if I'm just losing my patience. Probably some of both.

I drive a 2-lane road for about 65 miles every week, where the speed limit is 55 MPH. Do those idiots that wait until you get 75-100 feet from them to pull out not realize what the speed limit is?

And they do a lot of tailgating too.

This happens to me ALL the time... it might be the single most frustrating thing in my life. Jump in a Corvette, hit some awesome twisty backroads, and then immediately get stuck behind a slow-poke for miles and miles... then once that slow-poke turns off, another one pulls out in front of you, stuck again, etc.

A lot of the roads around here do not provide a safe opportunity to pass on a double-yellow even if you wanted to... so, passing is pretty much not an option 95% of the time regardless of how daring you might be.

The sad truth is, what good is a Corvette without a great open road to drive it on? My big problem as of late is not being able to get out to where the roads are more open. Being stuck in the local area doesn't inspire me to even take the car out anymore... it's almost not worth it. Start it up just to creep along behind a line of slow-pokes...... running on 30 horses while the other 370 are just sleeping... and then soon I'm nearly sleeping as well.

I think I'm gonna get back into bicycling for now.

I would have pulled over at a safe location.

Set back and enjoy a couple of songs. Got out and wiped down my great ride.

By that time she would be long gone.

Then back on the road.
