That hatch area is mostly a "dead air" space
My experience is different. When I first took delivery of my '07, I only received one FOB and of course, proceeded to lay it down in the hatch area and locked it inside.

The hatch release button worked just fine
Glad it worked for you, it depends exactly where it is. (The odds are against you)
You got lucky, should have bought a lottery ticket that day.
I purchased an insurance policy. The premium was $3.20. It's called a B-106 key for a Saturn(does not have the plastic handle). I purchased the policy at Jerry's Lock and Key. Like my life insurance policy, I hope I never need to use it, but it's there just in case.
It only took me once of locking my keys in the car to never do it again - that was in 1974.
For me it was 1967. I got out of the truck to open a gate, absentmindedly hit the lock as I got out. So there I was, in -20 weather, standing outside my running truck with no way in, and cattle gathering round to investigate the incident, hoping to mooch an ear of corn or make a break for freedom through the open gate. That's the last time I've gotten out of a vehicle without first making sure the key is in my hand or in my pocket.
Called AAA upon finding myself locked out of my 05. Key was in the hatch area. Yeah, I know you don't need to say it. They were unable to get in either by picking the lock or by the window entry method. Finally resolved this with a trip to the house and the other key. What if I'd been on a trip and 500 miles from home? Needless to say I considering contingency plans. Careful out there.
Go to Dollar General or a pet store and get a cheapie nylon quick connect strap $2.00 cat collar (in your car's color!).
A few cuts and slices and dices to make it small and a bit of hot melt glue to keep it from slipping out of the keeper.. put it back together with a double loop and you have a nice thing to clip your fob to a belt loop or to your belt.
first I place the fob in my pocket. 2nd I have had a spare key made then removed the plastic and placed that key in my wallet. One or both are always in my jeans. No onstar here, 2006 my.
