Until you are in a serious accident which is caused 100% by someone else and it results in an injury from someone speeding there will always be someone or something such as government to blame!

didnt even know u had highway patrols in canada, i drove through ontario and quibeck on 2 week road trip last summer and never saw one single cop

as for the letting him sit in your car, i wouldnt even let him come close to the car unless he would cancel the impound or knock off some other charges

Only three more days until I head over to the impound lot to pick up my baby. I'm picturing it outside covered in dust and dirt with muddy tires . Luckily it hasn't rained since last weekend.

I' a project manager for a family owned mine management corporation, and my father happens to be my boss and direct supervisor. He wasn't overly excited at the prospect of my insurance doubling and having a huge impact on the company insurance policy. Fortunately he knows me very well and is backing my 100% on this. He's an enthusiast himself and has his share of performance vehicles. He has offered to help me with legal fees as well as the service of our Toronto based law firm. I can see my experience has already impacted his driving habits, he's paranoid about suffering the same overkill consequences.

I already planned to spend all the money I was going to use to mod the car this year ( bolt-ons, heads/cam, 3:90's, 20/19's ) on a legal battle. So with help he has offered I plan on not only fighting my ticket but the legislation itself.

There have already been many many cases of dismissal. Despite this you have already been punished with a 7 day suspension and impound. I totally disagree with this, for me it was not my DD and I live close enough to work that the cost of cabbing it there all week wasn't too bad. Most people aren't this lucky. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Don't waste your time the the legislation, get your lawyer to do what he needs to to get your situation fixed.

What would be the fine if you were caught going 50Km/hr over the limit with a person in your trunk while you were doing donuts?

In Australia, they call 'stunt-driving' "hooning". They even put big signs on the car when it is in impound for the week. I had to laugh. I can't believe that you can be a "hoon" just for laying a little rubber on the road or driving 28 mph over the speed limit. Must be a commonwealth thing.
You think Canada is bad, DO NOT speed in The Peoples Republic of Oregon. I have yet to be popped there but friends have. They run totally Stealth cops in the latest muscle cars. The whole state is one big speed trap.

Thats way overboard. You really have to watch the driving.
The way things are, It's a ticket for anything. They are hard up for cash. They abuse the safety guise bigtime. No person drives the speed limit here. They all speed it's just, How much!

radar detection - never leave home without it. I was behind a bunch of cars on my Ducati, the lanes opened up and the Z28 picked up the pace. I figured he was doing 90 in a 55 on HWY 395. My radar detector was going nuts and I was going 55. the Z got a chance to make a new friend with lots of shiny lights. I was then time to pick up the pace.

Kind of hard to do since he lives in Ontario where it is illegal. I spent about 4 days in Ontario two summers ago and the police were everywhere.

Well for the metric challenged amongst us:

He was doing 102mph in a 66 zone....

I think that would be tough to get out of anywhere here in the colonies too. At least the cop was nice, here they would have tazered you when you got out of the car....unless you are a tax cheat...in which case you get a free helicopter ride back to Washington.

As a fellow Ontario Vette owner, I feel your pain. I have been lucky not to get a single ticket (knock on wood) in my C6, but driving a car that in a couple of seconds can go from the speed limit to 'stunt driving' speed, you have to be carefull. I sometimes think that when I eventually get a ticket, I would love to appear in court and ask the judge why they legally sell a vehicle that will do 300 km/h, when anything over 150 is stunt driving.

I am also curious as to where you got caught. I grew up in Ottawa and have had a fair amount of exposure to the local constabulary (OPP are the worst). I have got my share of tickets on Highway 7, 417, 401, etc.

As per all the other recommendations, I would also suggest getting some legal assistance. Hopefully you will get off with a reduced fine and limited damage in points and added insurance.

I wish you luck. Keep the vette if at all possible, but come join some of your local Ontario vette owners at the local tracks. That is the only place that you can legally and safely enjoy the true potential of a fine automobile.

Good Lord, some folks can be awfully self righteous. I did something today that was very similar. I bought the car to drive it fast. Lets get past that.

HTA172 (the name of this stunt driving law) is nothing but a cash grab and publicity stunt.

It's absolutely ridiculous. There have been a large number of cases where the accused were found 100% innocent. And by 100% innocent I don't mean their charges were reduced to lesser ones... These people walked out of court without a single citation, YET, they still had to pay the impound fees, the tow fees, and the insurance hike. These are people that should never have been charged with anything in the first place, and yet, are now out thousands of dollars.

Just some info. for those who aren't familiar with this law... If you squeal your tires, the police officer can cite this as stunt driving and impound your car. Ever drive with crappy tires on a hot day? They'll squeal. Now what do ya think will happen if it's a 19 yr old that accidentally did that? You guessed it.

This law has been abused by police across the province ever since it came into effect. They sit at transition zones with a line of tow trucks waiting. There's a particular highway that ends and turns into a rural road. Cops love to sit at the end of that highway and just pick off cars to impound.
Excellent point.

And I, respectfully, disagree with the police officer's post before this, that everyone seems to agree with on "manning up." Some aspects seemed good, but it all amounted to you making admissions. Listen, man up in life to your responsibilities, don't be a dope and help others clobber you over bs rules meant to pad the bottom lines of bs politicians as if that act of penance is somehow virtuous. Save your contrition for your loved ones and those you respect around you that have earned it.

Anyway, why would you take advice from someone whose SOLE job is to nab you? They see the world, generally, as you're a good guy if you throw yourself at their mercy; and that generally, everyone out there are scurge. Honestly, I almost always hear cops give out "advice" that amounts to "confess, it will be easier." For whom? Them? The state? And when you get a few drinks in them and ask the same questions, they will admit (sometimes cursing) that you shouldn't ever admit anything to a cop. EVER. No matter how minor it seems. Unless you don't care about the worse case consequences. Sure be polite, cooperate, be nice, but NEVER, EVER EVER EVER admit anything to a cop. Admission is a tragic tactic, particularly where there are minimum penalties set out that the judge cannot change. At least that's the case in the US; perhaps it's different in Canada.

Get a lawyer. If this is that much a make or break thing for you, get one. Don't admit anything. Pardon my disbelief, but the odds of someone in the court digging out corvette forum posts that somehow match up (even if your real name is Spectrel) to you is low. You do not have to admit to anything, at least in the US, it's their obligation to prove your wrong doing (again, at least that's the case in the US). But just by having someone on your side, and them realizing they will LOSE money because a lawyer is involved (in transaction costs), they will much more likely be inclined make a deal.

I'm not one to recommend using jerk lawyers generally, but when it's an issue that totally affects your life, it's probably worth the investment.

Not always true. I've umm... heard about people going 110 in 50mph zones that got out of tickets. Having FOP cards, apparently, helped.

Also, it depends on the region.

On the highways from CA to Vegas, doing those speeds amounts to minor tickets (at least a few years ago that was the case).
