I own a 07 C6 with the A6 autotrans and a 88 C4 with 4 speed autotrans with overdrive. My question is when I down shift the 88 for extra stopping power I get an immediate responce but with the C6 A6 there is a lag time between the time I hit the down shift paddle and and slow down. Why? It's the computer, right?

That's just how they work, create you own reason why. Some say a trans tune will help some (warrenty?). The '08's are a bit crisper, so you could trade up. Or, as I have done, adjust to it and shift a little sooner. Not sure about the '09's to know if they've got it right now.
Put it in "S" stand on the brakes to slow entry into a corner and then back to the throttle. Let the "Auto" shift for you.
Forget about the paddle shifters, I think they are just there as a marketing gimmick. The brakes will slow it down a lot quicker than engine braking without the wear on the engine.
It's amazing what you can do with modern brakes. There is just no need to use the engine for breaking anymore.

When you find yourself coming up on someones rear end you may need all the braking power you can get. For the C6 I guess I'll just have to "stand on it" and hope.

Downshifting will screw up your antilock braking. In the emergency stop your describing you sure don't want to consider downshifting.

There is a lot of lag in the A6 (I've an '07) and gets annoying at times. I've almost lost control of the car because of the delayed response whereby I downshifted an extra gear.

The fastest way you will ever stop the car is just to hit the brakes. Forget about the transmission. Plus the auto downshifts for you as it slows down anyway.
[QUOTE=RED HUSKY;1569365937]What year is yours? And how did you get them to this A6 patch?[/QUOTE
Mine is a 06 and the car has been flawless. I have 5 K on it. I took it in for the TSB on the steering and told them I wanted the update patch. They D/L'd 20 updates. I have more power ( trust me I can tell) better idle, quicker throttle response, better shifting, less shift shock on D/S ing. Quicker upshifts. I am very happy with this car.

I use the paddles only when I'm in the mountains so I can control what gear the tranny is in since it has no idea what the road will do up ahead. S mode is great considering it is OEM.
