EDIT: I spelled plating wrong..can't modify thread title..oh well.
I finally gave up trying to keep my CCW's clean After doing some research I've decided to have them chrome plated. I've looked online at several places and was leaning toward sending them to cal chrome. Does any one know of any other places with a good rep for plating? I
I don't really want to spend $500 in shipping costs ( $225 each way) but it looks like EVERY chrome plating facility in the country is on the west coat
Thanks for any help.
P.S. If anyone wants to make an offer for the CCW's I'd consider selling them. they are 19x 13 rear 18 x 9 fronts sp500's with Nitto Evos.
Couple of places near you in PA, and others in NE area. Bring them there yourself. No possible damage and you get to talk to the plater face-to-face. Some platers are not the easiest people to deal with at time. You can find names in Hemmings. A couple that come to mind are Frankfort Plating, Pauls Plating (both in Phila area)
Thanks guys. I read the cal chrome "warranty" and it made me feel uneasy about plating the rims to say the least. I will check out the places in PA as mentioned.
I researched the polish and clear coat suggestion. As per CCW, they become dull and yellow a little bit.
After researching all of the potential issues and looking at the cost, I'm moving closer to just selling them and moving on. I'll know for sure tomorrow when I go through Hemmings website with a fine tooth comb and make some calls.
I had my CCW T10's chrome plated by Cal Chrome last year. I had the barrels plated in addition to the faces.
I too did several months of research with the help of Jimmy P. at AtomicAutoStore, who provided an amazing amount of perseverance and tenacity on his part.
We found that there are few platers willing and competent to do small runs of car wheels. It has something to do with the difficulty in dealing with the aluminum alloy used in high quality wheels, and having the proper electrodes to get the plating into all of the nooks and crannies. CCW provided the wheels in "plating ready" condition. I'm not sure what that means exactly, I didn't see them until they were shipped to me from Cal Chrome.
Cal Chrome was my best option and they did a good job. I coated them with REJEX and I have ceramic brake pads so there is less dust and it appears to be less corrosive than OEM. I keep them clean, which is easy, and I have not seen any signs of failure in the chrome.....yet.
I was advised by several Vendors to not go the clear-coat route. I was told it would yellow and repairs are a PITA.
Contact Jimmy P. at atomicautostore@aol.com. He's located in Florida near CCW and he can offer much more insight into this.
Read their warranty carefully. It seems they do not stand behind their work very well. Someone I know had a horrible experience with them.
IMO, CCWs look better than chrome when correctly polished. I use Mother's Billet. But it does require some time and effort. Something I think a lot of people are not willing to do.
