Default Transmision question

I'm new to the site and to corvette's. I'm looking at getting used vette. I really want a standard but I have found a pretty good deal on a automatic and I don't know if I can pass it up. So I was wondering how strong are the Automatic transmisions in the c6 vettes? Just in case I ever decied to heavaly modify the vette. Thanks for the help

The auto in 05 was a 4spd tranny. The newer years went to 6spd Autos, Make sure you know what rear end ratio is in your auto cars if your looking for max performence!

I have a 07Z and had a 05 6spdM All manuals have a 3.42!

Standard rear end for '05 A4 was 2.73, the performance axle was 3.15. You would probably be happier with the 3.15. As said, all manual trans cars have 3.42 axles.

The A4 in the '05's is a pretty good trans, not great, but pretty good. I have a friend here with a modded '05 A4. I think he is at 425 rwhp and the trans has not been any problem at all. Here is a thread from last year with a post showing the difference btw the A4 in the C5's and the new A4 in the '05 C6:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...a4-tranny.html

Of course you know that if you get a Z51 with manual trans the gearing in the trans is different (lower, higher numerically) than the standard manual.

What about the automatic tranny in a vette with the Z51 package on it?

I'm not positive. I THINK the Z51 with A4 came with the 3.15 performance axle, but I am not 100% sure. Hopefully someone will come by and answer that for you.

I have a 2009 Z51 A6 with the 2.73 rear axle ratio. It works just fine and I especially like the A6 when driving in traffic, which occurs more frequently than I would like. I generally prefer manual transmissions and at times I wish I had one, but most of the time I'm glad I have the automatic. It's not perfect, but it does the job -- especially with the paddle shifters. I'm sure others may disagree, but for me at this time,
it's just fine. Everyone has their own preference though. Good luck.

Paul, I think the 3.15 rear axle ratio was standard with the Z51 option for automatics for 2005.

I actually don't think that it was Jim. I believe that it was strictly a free form option in 2005. Easy enough to find out. Any 2005 owner with an automatic could simply to check their RPO list in the glove and check for G90.

I have a 05 A4 with 3:15 and RPO says G90.

Did you order the G90 as an option or did it simply come with it? (sticker would list the $395 option if yes) Like the 2008 it was available as a free form option and anyone with an automatic could order it. The question still remains as to whether it was included (no charge as part of the Z51) or simply ordered as a free form option.

I have an 05 A4 Z51 with 3:15 and the RPO in the glovebox shows G90.

It doesn't mean its right but I just checked the Corvette museum website and it shows that the 3:15 was an option for for the A4, with the 3:42 being the standard for the manuals, Z51 or not.

I just checked the option list via corvetteactioncenter. JIM, you are right (and me too, kind of) . It shows the G90 performance axle 3.15 is standard with the Z51 pkg.

That's what I recall from my order back then.
But I changed to MN6 as the 3.15 was on hold.

'05, esp early '05 MN6's had some problems.
DBS, dead battery syndrome, fixed with BCM reflash upgrade.
And early '05 clutches had some troubles. Mine had the clutch sticking to the floor problem.
And then there's the harmonic dampener problem if the VIN is less than 11039. This affects either tranny.

Make sure that you have the vehicles service record, and make sure that all the teething problems have been fixed.
And seriously consider a warranty.
