Default Wipers and Headlights Interconnect

On my '08 in the day light if I turn on the wipers then the headlights will automatically turn on after about 20 seconds. And vice versa: When I turn off the wipers the headlights will turn off automatically (in the day light) after few seconds. I found this to be a useful feature which is again not mentioned in my owner's manual, so its worth mentioning it in this forum.

Since 2007, California law requires drivers to turn on their headlights in the rain. I believe this feature has been integrated in some of our cars (or maybe all) while ago. Again I am not sure which model years and which state cars have this feature.

From page 167 in my 07 owner's manual:

Wiper Activated Headlamps
This feature activates the headlamps and parking
lamps after the windshield wipers have been in
use for approximately 15 seconds and deactivates
and returns to ambient lighting conditions
15 seconds after the wipers are turned off.
If the exterior lamp control has been turned off or
is in the parking lamp position while the wiper
control is active in any position, the HEADLAMPS
SUGGESTED message appears on the Driver
Information Center (DIC). See DIC Warnings and
Messages on page 212.
When the ignition is turned off, the wiper-activated
headlamps will immediately turn off.

GM must have been saving ink in 08.

The 2005 owner's manual mentions it, I don't have a 2008 manual so I can't say if it is in there or not. Lights on when raining laws have been common in the southeastern US for many years, at least as far back as the 1980s in Georgia. Having the car do it for us is a convenience.

I am wrong. It is in the manual but on page 156, section 3-16

http://www.c6registry.com/Technical/2008corvette.pdf

Thank you Sherman.

So, it does rain in California? Probably a pretty rare thing so no wonder you were surprised.

I agree that GM is saving ink! How many pages on 2007 manual? I have 430 pages on 2008.

486 pages in the 2007 owner's manual.

The wiper-activated headlamps info. was also in the 2005 owner's manual, so it's probably in all of them for the C6.

Nope, Section 3-16 (page 156) of the 2008 Owners manual. It is actually on the same page as the DRL's turning off when the parking brake is set.

Will the headlights automatically turn on if the wipers are used only in the delay mode instead of the high or low speed mode?

Tim, If I recall, no they won't. The wipers must be on for 15 seconds before the timer will kick the headlights on. This is to prevent you flashing everyone everytime you use the momentary wipers.

Thanks, Paul.

You are correct about the momentary position. I couldn't find anything about the delay mode causing the headlights to come on automatically. I just got back from trying this and yes, indeed, the headlights will also come on when using the delay mode after 15 secs.

Yes, the headlights will turn on in wiper intermitant mode too. Tested.

Thanks, bimmerborn. I tested it also. Good thread for folks that haven't read or did read the manual but have forgotten some of the finer points of the owner's manual....

Reason: GM deleted the 56 pages in the '08 owner's manual to save weight so the LS3 could keep up with the LS2....

What's an owner's manual and how do you get one?

JK.

I agree the headlight on/wiper on is a great feature.
