Default Radio Static

Hi everyone...I need some help trying to pin point a problem with my radio reception...I have a 2005 with NAV/XM...I don't have the XM service activated and use the FM radio...lately the reception has been very scratchy and seems to be getting worse. I know it's not just the area because it's fine in my other car...and not the speakers because the CD plays fine as does XM (when you tune to it and hear the advertisement)...it's just the radio reception. I suspect it's the antenna on top of the car but not sure and trying to get some ideas together before taking it in (have the GM extended warranty)...any ideas what is causing this?

Thanks

Quick fix:

Turn on radio, switch to AM then back to FM.

Permanent fix:

Go into dealer and have the NAV/Radio reflashed.

It was covered under warranty for me, but you may have to negotiate with the dealer.

I have the same radio, same problem. I asked this a couple of weeks ago and was told to go to this site...

I haven't tried it yet but was told it will work. If you want more info on it, pm me.

Either have the dealer do, or do yourself with the downloaded CD images, the reflash for the Nav HU. It does 2 things. First it fixes the antenna selector problem that intermittantly causes poor FM reception (the radio sometimes tries to use the AM antenna instead of the FM diversity antennas). Second the reflash allows the CD player to play MP3s. This allows you to put up to 150 songs on a single CD, that's better than the optional 6 CD trunk mount player, and free.

BTW, the wart on the roof halo is XM only. It has nothing to do wth AM or FM reception. The latter use antennas hidden in the rear fascia, one is a voltage probe for AM, and the other two are diversity FM antennas.

There is another possible problem that some early 2005 cars suffer. A factory assembly error swapped the coax cable going to the AM preamp module with the coax going to the FM diversity module. You can easily check this by looking at the diversity module (behind the carpet in the rear fasica area of the car). It has a connector with a green ring. The cable plugged into it should also have a green marking. If the green marked cable is on the other module (AM preamp), simply swap the cables and note an immediate and dramatic improvement in both AM and FM radio reception.

thanks everyone for the helpful information...

shopddog - you've peaked my interest as mine is an early 2005. Can you please tell me exactly where I find this area you refer to? How do I check without pulling things apart? I'm not the handy type...any further instructions/pics you can share on this would be appreciated.
