Default Removing pin striping?

The previous owner had some simple painted pin striping (light gray) done up both sides of the hood and along the body lines from the back end of the doors to the end. Is there an easy way to remove these without hurting the finish?

You are certain that they are painted, not vinyl?

Definitely! If I had a better macro lens on my camera, I could prove it to you with the brush strokes. Whoever did it did a great job...I'm just curious...I'm not necessarily going to remove them.

OK, here is another angle with a different lens without the flash...you can see the brush strokes. Yeah, they are ok but I'm wanting silver rally-style stripes so we'll see.

The local pinstriper and graphics guy around here uses oven cleaner since the pinstipes are a oil base and won't hurt the clear. He'll stripe your car and after a week or so if you don't like the look, out comes the oven cleaner.

If they cant be removed with a solvent, a body shop can sand them off the clear, without damaging the clear or paint, with a very high grade grit ( 1500 - 2000 at least) and buff the area back to gloss. Very do-able.

No BS! If the pinstriping is an oil base than the oven cleaner will do the job. Oil base products are a petroleum base just like the grease in your oven.

OK, I will say it sounds like it makes sense when you put it that way but....what is this guy's name? Does he have a web site? Anybody else ever used oven cleaner to do this??

His name is Steve Kafka in Phoenix and was taught by the old school guy who had the old brown (I think) school bus as his shop. He was like the godfather of flames and pinstriping. Steve bought the bus I think it was one or two years ago at the Barrett auction.

I would not try that oven cleaner in a million years unless it was on a spare hood, or some car i didnt care about. Just seems kinda risky. Go the pro way, take your car to a paint shop. It is possible that when the pinstripes are removed you will still be able to see a "shadow" of where they used to be. Just like when you take off vynil graphics off a car after they have been on for a long while.

See this thread : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1565209607-post19.html

Short answer denatured alcohol from a paint store will work on painted pinstripes. I know I had some on my caddy and it removed them when all the other stuff did not work.

Thanks to all! If I decide to take 'em off I have gotten a lot of good info! CF comes through again!
