Default Corvette VIN assignment

My wife and I ordered our first Corvette (3LT Crystal Red convertible with museum delivery) --the order was placed February 26, 2009. We were told it would take 6 to 8 weeks, which is fine. We tried to settle on the car before the end of March to avoid a price increase (the salesman called and told us about that), but couldn't settle without a VIN for the paperwork. We were told at that time that the factory wouldn't assign a VIN until April 6. No one has called us yet about a VIN assignment. Does anyone know how long before the car is built that the VIN is assigned?

Looks like the factory is only going to be open for about two weeks in April -- shouldn't I be getting a phone call soon?

Anyone have insight into this?

Were you given a confirmed TPW (Target Production Week)?

Legitmate question. Dealer allocations are always a tricky point with regard to the build time. I would recommend you contact your dealer and get your status event code. This is basically the time line and progress report for where your car is in the cycle.

STATUS EVENT CODES
1100-Order placed at dealer
1101-Order accepted by GM
2001-Order generated to dealer
2005-Order replaced with GM Prospec order
2050-Order changed
2500-Order sent to production, preferenced
3000-Order accepted by production control
3100-Order available to sequence (now the tpw becomes more stable)
3300-Order selected for production by assembly plant
3400-Order broadcasted for production
3800-Vehicle produced
4150-Vehicle invoiced to dealer
4200-Vehicle shipped
5000-Vehicle delivered to dealer
6000-Vehicle delivered to customer

As far as your VIN goes, the assembly plant is currently closed and will not re-open until the 13th of April. You won't likely be getting a VIN until they re-open.

Rick and Paul are dead-on with their info above. As for VIN assignment, I got mine roughly a week before my car hit the production line but circumstances were a little different then (June, 2005). Back then, a great guy who worked at the plant (Kevin Tarrence) went out of his way to provide us with info in VINs, exact on-line and off-line dates, and dates our cars were transferred to Allied for shipment. Unfortunately for us, Kevin was later reassigned to other duties at the plant and is no longer able to provide that type of information. When my car was nearing production, my dealer was unable to obtain its VIN; they didn't have it until they received the invoice (after the car was produced). I'm betting that things are still the same now.

All great replies but let me answer your original concern as follows: You are price protected!!! When your dealership entered the order in Feb and GM accepted the order (this has nothing to do with whether or not your dealership has an allocation for you), you are price protected against any future price increases. It does not matter how long within the model year it takes GM to build the car. Even though the window sticker may include the higher MSRP in effect at delivery, you as the original buyer gets the price in effect when the order was first entered. So there is no need to get the VIN early and settle-up with your dealer to get the earlier price.

Congratulations on your first vette and you and your wife are going to love the NCM delivery. You will feel like a king & queen for the day!!! My wife and I have done it twice so far.

But with BG hoping to get orders to build Corvettes, does allocation still matter in getting one built?

And that's my naive question of the day.

In a single word - Yes. GM still determines total allocations and how many and when those allocations are distributed to dealers. That has not changed even though the total number of allocations has surely changed since last summer.

My understanding is that the VIN is assigned between 3300 and 3400. The dealer will be sent the VIN at 4150 but it will be in the order workbench once it is assigned so they can look it up.

Thanks to all for your help. I didn't realize there was so much going on behind the scenes! It's good to know that someone else agrees that we should be insulated from any price increases. Make me wonder what the dealer was thinking ...

I got a call from the salesman this afternoon-- they got a letter telling them to tell us to contact the museum. I did and talked with Laura -- what a great person (she was there on 'overtime' calling me)! She was so happy for us -- and she had a VIN! The car rolls off the line on April 16th, then goes into an immediate two week quality control hold. That's for all Corvettes -- coupe, convertible, Z06 and ZR1. First date we could get it is April 30th. Talked with the boss (it's really HER car) and I think we'll go down near May 7th. I'll call Laura back tomorrow and let her know. Takes 5-6 hours to go through all the tours, paperwork, car features, etc. Then we'll drive it home to PA. We can hardly wait!!

I'm impressed! Two museum deliveries? Wow!! Lucky guy ...

That is great news! Just a couple of things, it is likely Lori (Bieschke) that you spoke with. Lori is the assistant to the delivery program manager Gary Cockreil. Also, the two week quality hold is ONLY for museum delivery vehicles and it is mandatory for museum vehicles, but it is not all Corvettes produced.

You will really enjoy the entire Museum delivery experience make sure you take it all in.
