I have the maunal transmission and I have the same loud click everytime I hit the brake. Should it be the same for the manual transmission as well?

I have an 06 A6 and the clicking is def. from the shift release activated from the brake pedal. Mine actually stuck in the release position and caused a "hum" in the sound system that you could hear even tho the system was off. The hang -up and hum went away after disconnecting the battery for 10 sec. Your dealer should order a new shift mechanism under warranty, at least mine did and the problem has not re-occurred--knock on wood!

seems to be two different noises--brake solenoid and park release. If it is the park release (A6) , you should feel it in the shifter and it will get worse. Brake solenoid no prob

Hmmm...I did a search and found this thread.

I have an 05 A6 which is new to me and I noticed a double-click coming from what seemed like behind the center console this morning. At first I thought it was the CD player having trouble reading the disc. Shut the car off and went into a meeting. Came back and it's gone. Only occurred when the brakes were applied at cruising speed, not when creeping along. I hear the relay click you're talking about, but that doesn't really bug me.

Wondering what that sound from behind the console was.

update: I tried a new 12193606 relay and it clicks just the same as the 12193606 one in my 09. So a new one is the same before. Oh well.

09Z- have the click every time I brake, it's not intermittent it happens every time. Sounds like its coming from passenger side foot well or in the console. I never paid any attention to it just thought it was normal..

There are two sources causing the clicking noises discussed herein when applying the brakes on my 2008 Vette with an automatic transmission.

The most prominent clicking sound comes from the release of the transmission safety interlock when applying the brakes with the transmission in park and the ignition on. When the transmission is not in the park position, applying the brake with the ignition on will not cause this clicking noise since the safety lock is not in the locked position.

The less prominent clicking sound occurs anytime the brakes are applied with the ignition on causing the stop lights to be activated. Normally when driving I will not notice this not-very-loud clicking sound.

I have never considered either condition to be a problem and would not request Mr. Goodwrench to deal with it. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.

For those who say they hear no clicking, try applying the brakes with the ignition on/ engine off.
