Default Goodyear runflats

I have an 08 coupe 6spd with the standard gy runflats. My only modification is a Diablosport tune. I have noticed that I am having a hard time getting traction in first gear and about half way through 2 nd gear. They recommend 30psi, but since the car sat pretty much the whole winter, I adjusted the tire pressure to 34psi in all 4 tires. Could the additional 4 psi be the cause of my traction issues? My vette only has 900 miles, so I know for a fact that the tires are in perfect shape. What would be the best replacement if I decided to replace the stock runflats?

I have no experience w/ runflats in cold climates, but from what I've read here in CF there certainly can be traction problems. I don't see the additional few psi being a problem and I would imagine they do better after they're warmed up.

However, I'm not a fan of runflats at all and would recommend replacing them with good performance tires (non-runflats.) There are many choices depending on your driving behavior.

This forum is a great reference database for all things Corvette and the Search utility at the top should yield numerous threads on various tire choices for your specific needs.

I believe that 34 lbs will make the center of the tread pattern a larger diameter, giving you less tire patch on the pavement and greater tire wear in the center.

I'd say you could be having traction issues due to the added psi per tire. The 4 psi you've added may not seem significant, but every bit counts.

In addition, depending on how you checked those tire pressures on taking your car out for the first time since storage, it could be even a couple more pounds, one way or the other (plus or minus).

Check it with a good gauge at cold temps (meaning, first thing in the morning) and see what it reads.

If it's not 30, try setting it to 30. I see you're in Chic. Recognize that at temps below 50 ambient (which it probably is, first thing in the morning), you could be losing progressively more traction with max summer tires which yours probably are. The loss of traction may not necessarily be proportional at 40, 30, etc.

Correct. Any high performance summer tire will lose more traction at cold temps than an all season tire, and any overinflation can make it worse. The Supercar runflats on my 2006 are noticably more slippery at 50'F than at 80'F, below freezing they are awful.
Also, you need to drive a few miles to get the tires up to operating temp before doing anything exciting.
Spring is here, Enjoy!

Gearhead Jim, I see that you are from the 'burbs of Chicago, as I am. I have to ask about, "spring is here." Your suburb must be about 500 miles South, :0)

I ran my car straight through the NJ winter with GY runflats. I did some amazing burnouts through 3 gears. Drifting was also another great benefit. Traction? It's just a word in the dictionary when the temps go below 40 with those tires and power is applied. It's getting better now since our temps are in the mid to high 50's now. Those are summer only rated. Other guys have had better results with different brands.

I have to find something better for next year. Probably Pirellis.

Tire pressure is too high and temperature is too low to hook up a stock m6. Supercar tires are even worse at these temps. Drop pressure to 30psi and wait till it warms up. When your tires wear out there a lots of better tires for traction control. At 430+ hp and tq, you're putting a lot of power to summer performance tires. Good luck and enjoy your car.
