don't believe you can. I wanted the ring on my 05 , so I ended up ordering an 09 whole new boot from Gene. It's not come in yet ,but he told me to get the ring I had to order the boot, and I did.
It doesn't come off. It looks like it's been crimped together somehow, and the whole thing is probably too flimsy to tolerate any fiddling with.
Unfortunately, if want to keep using the ring retainer, you should probably get a boot that has one, like the GM accessories ones (they do have two tone). With DSVettes boots, you probably don't really need a ring.
Turn the stock boot inside out and you will see how the ring is secured to the boot. If I recall correctly, the ring is secured by a piece of vinyl string and just cut it off. The ring comes out and install in the new boot. The ring was a tight fit in the DSV boot and did not need secure it to the boot. I have had no issues so far and stays is place.

I think it was $60 - $70 range.
I hope you know that the shift **** is different too,the **** has a keyway slot for the chrome ring to lock into.

The chrome ring has a deep groove in it that top of the OEM boot slips into.
You just have to pull the boot firmly to release it from the ring.
The DS Vettes boot leather is MUCH thicker than the OEM vinyl.
If you work at it, you can get the DS Vettes boot to slip onto the ring.
It's a VERY tight fit, but it will go on.
So, yes, you can use the 08 OEM trim ring with a DS Vettes (or similar) boot.
Also.....
The DS Vettes **** also has thicker leather.
Because this, it is difficult to snap the chrome ring back onto the shifter.
But IT WILL snap on......and, you can get it back off if you need to.
