Default Problem with Auto Dimming Mirror

Has anybody else had an issue with their auto dimming mirror? Recently mine has started dimming the drivers side and rear view mirrors all the time, even during the day...whereas I believe it is only supposed to happen at night...so consequently I have to hit the mirror button to turn it off every time I start the car...

Any idea what might be going on? And if anybody has had this happen to them what is the fix?

The system is set to dim if there is a darkness in the car with light coming in from outside the car. Sometimes if there is a new tint applied to the windows it will fool the system and you will have the condition you describe. Of course, other times there is just a malfunction in the sensor/system and will need some work.

Any chance there was a tint applied just before the mirrors started dimming out of norm?

My inside mirror will not dim. It is on and the light is lit. I have never liked the auto dim mirrors. Not enough diming when they do work and it is much to big and blocks vision. Visability is at a premium in the Vette anyway. Any thoughts on this? This is one gadget that is way overkill IMO.
Less is more.

Nope, it started happening this past weekend when I finally took it out of storage for the spring...otherwise it has just been sitting under a car cover since November...but there is no tint on the car anywhere...

Any idea where the sensor for this is located?

I believe there are two sensors. If memory serves me right, there is one on the backside (faces the windshield) and another just under the mirror glass facing the back of the car. The one facing the windshield senses the level of light outside and the one facing back senses the interior light and glare from behind. Come to think about it, the windshield can play a role too. Was the windshield replaced just before this happened? And if so, was it the OEM glass or aftermarket?

Never had that happen. Mine doesn't work well at all when there IS a lot of light at night coming from the rear. You may want yours replaced tho.

I've been told to go back and get another one; not interested. Considering I've had auto-dimming mirrors that have worked well in every other car since '98, it's hard to believe this is a bad batch. I think it's poor specs and quality checking.

Nope, got all original glass all around...same original mirror, same everything as when it went into storage for the winter as when it came out...going in everything was working fine, coming out the two mirrors go dark every time...could it have anything to do with the wiring on the back of the mirror? I mean the auto dimming is obviously getting power so maybe that doesn't have anything to do with it...

I would doubt the wiring being the issue. I would start by cleaning the sensors on the mirror (wiping it down with a slightly damp micro fiber cloth) and then decide if you want to go farther. In your case the system is working (only the inside rear view mirror and drivers outside mirror dim... the passenger mirror is not included in the dimming system) but the system is dimming when it shouldn't. You might also find that it is just the lighting conditions you are in at the time. With my mirrors they will dim sometimes when pulling in and out of the garage since there is a lot of light outside the garage and not as much light inside the garage. The mirror adjusts once I am out of the garage and driving down the road....

Yea I thought that might also be the case, except I started it in the parking lot at work yesterday on a sunny day with not a cloud in the sky and it dimmed right away...so there is something up with the sensors somewhere...I'll take a look around for the sensors unless anybody else has had this problem before...

+1

When driving at night sometimes mine dims when a car is way behind me, but not when a tall SUV is right behind me with their lights glaring into my interior...go figure.

Totally disagree. I love autodimming mirrors and mine works great. It is also not too big and is really the same size as my other cars or other cars I drive. Cannot see that point at all.

Try cleaning the sensors....may want to take a can of compressed air and blow any dust or small insects that may have made a temp home in there over the winter.

Aye vey, I'm such a moron...so I go searching for the sensors and wouldn't you know it the one on the back of the mirror is covered by the stupid parking sticker I need for work...stupid me put the sticker on the wrong side of the mirror this time and ended up completely covering the sensor...pulled the sticker off, put it on the other side...problem solved!

Another sad case of self inflicted "deficient GM product"

Glad it was an easy fix.
