Default 2008 GM NAV Disc 5.0 Worth IT?

Hey ya'll, I was just wondering if I should update my nav disc to 5.0 from 4.0. Is there really a big difference between the two???

For $200, not to me....

To be fair though, GM has nothing to do with these discs...the problem is that they chose the wrong company to support the program....but now they are stuck with this system. They should have just gone with Garmin when they made this decision back in 2002 or 2003

I've now got the V5.0 disks after having had the 3.0 and 4.0 versions. The V5.0, for here on the west coast, I see more railroad tracks and carpool lanes that didn't appear before but other places that I drive such as a freeway extension that's been in place for the past 3 years, still doesn't show up. The system things I'm driving in the weeds. I haven't tested it on a long trip yet to see how it does. Personal opinion, unless there are major revisions to the data/information within, its not worth $200 each year. Every couple of years, maybe.

There are at least some differences, as Version 5 is the first one to have my home street on it. (It's a fairly new street, roughly 2 years old.)

Have 5.0 and everything I have needed has been on the disc.

When you look at the big picture of what other mainstream NAV providers charge (if at all ) for updates, it's totally NOT worth it.

200 dollars a year for changes that most likely will not effect the average person? No thanks.
Add in the fact that if you DO pay that much money you have to wait 2,3,4 months to actually get the thing.

I love both my GM vehicles, but this is one area where GM just sucks *** in terms of sensibility and customer service.

Very interesting....I cant speak for Chevy's system and how much of a change there is between 4.0 & 5.0 however I had a Magellan that I got in 2005... I just got a new one (2009) both were top of the line and would give me traffic updates etc...

However other than different graphics on the new (2009) I can't find one street on the new version thats not on the 4 yr old version..

There may be more or updated POI on the 09 version thats not on the older one, but I don't use the POI at all...

PS I paid $279 for my Magellan, and as I said it has all the bells and whistles... As I understand it it costs almost that much to just update from 4.0 to 5.0 ???

And why are they still backordered? It's not that hard to burn discs.

I got V5.0 because it was free (my last free one) but it's not worth upgrading at that price every year. Maybe every 3 to 4 years.

Isn't $200. a bit pricey? If I recall my last Garmin update was $20.

Yes, it is. I think it is way to much. Unfortunately about average for most models with a disc update. The only thing I can say is the Nav looks great in the Vette and more importantly is a very capable unit after reading the manual. Not as simple to learn as a Garmin. But, this Nav can do some incredible things. input phone number for directions, day/night mode, voice recognition, split screen, and many other options.

I just got my version 5 today for my 2008. Dealer furnished at no cost. I hope to see a difference over the 4.0 for all the complaining I did.

The two things I have on my vette that SUCK are the Bose stereo and the NAV. unit! Both are a total waste of money! You can buy a used nav. from a pawn shop that works better than a GM Nav. WHY anyone should have to pull over and stop your car to change directions on a nav. unit is FREAKEN STUPID! GM should get a kick in the kester for these useless options! There, I feel better now.

No, its not stupid. The same reason using a cell phone is illegal in lots of places. You can't drive and play with the nav. Your convienence is not worth mine or someone else's life.

That being said, yes you can change destinations while driving. It just takes some planning.

I agree partially, except using that argument could also be used for some of the other buttons/*****/etc on your car. Is changing a CD while driving more/less dangerous than pushing some buttons for the nav?

In my opinion, if you have a passenger in the car the Nav lockout should be turned off (this can easily be linked to the airbag detect system) so at least the passenger can make the adjustments.
