I wanted to check in here first to take advantage of the collective wisdom of the corvette forum.
I'm looking at a local 2006 Convertible Vette with 3LT pkg. 6 sp. No nav or power top. It's velocity yellow, and it looks to be in almost showroom new cond., just a few light wrinkles on the drivers seat-mild wear which I am fine with.
It has 28k miles, and is for sale for $32,695 with a warranty. It is being sold by a local used car dealership with a good reputation.
I looked up the carfax and it had 1 owner who lived in upstate NY before being traded in, then auctioned to the current dealer. It has no issues whatsoever.
I'm thinking it would make a good car for me, but I'm not very familiar with Vettes and don't know what to look for problem-wise.
I am considering asking the dealer to let me take it to my mechanic who is excellent, and letting him take a look at it. Is this an unreasonable request?
Also, the tires are close to needing replacement. They will pass inspection, but need replacing in about a year or so. I also want a guarantee that the car will pass inspection, or be corrected so it will pass, including new tires if necessary. Unreasonable?
My reasoning is that since it was a one-owner car and was paid for at the time of purchase, it was likely an older owner who would hopefully be responsible with break-in, maintenance, etc. I realize that 28k mi is high for a 2006 vette, but is it a deal breaker? I'm inclined to think not in this case, but I'd love your input.
i've seen an 06 Z with high miles go for the same price... if you wait, you can find the exact car you are looking for and the prices will only get better.
LOL ...Good one
That's the best advice I've heard lately about purchasing a Corvette. Don't let anyone else tell YOU what is a good deal or not . MMm where did you say that Pinto was ?
If you think it is a good deal, go for it. I would by all means get the Vette cked out as much and to the extent you want, if the dealer won't let you, turn and run. I found a 08 I was interested in, thought about it, thought, and finally made a offer, got a reply in a week, the Vette got sold the next day. You must do what you must. True the prices may come down, and there may be just the one you want, but how soon, you must do what you are happy with. Advice only goes so far, good luck in what ever you do. Sounds like a nice Vette.
The price seems resonable, but you should check for comparable cars on Ebay ect. This is peak price season for convertibles. In addition to the mechanical, I'd have a body shop take a look at it, just in case its been whacked. Probably not likely, but better to be safe.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
And sorry I put this thread in the wrong category.
I have an appointment on Thursday to see this car up close and talk financing. The finance guy I talked to on the phone said that all their cars are guaranteed to pass NJ state inspection. They also have extended available warranties available to purchase, I may go with one if the price is right -- just for my peace of mind.

Thanks again,

Just a word of advice on the GMPP, I spent 760 for a 5 year 40,000 mile with 0 deductible. If they try charging much more than this I would talk to other dealers and see what they offer you. I have heard from many on this forum that some dealers charge up to double the cost of the GMPP. Some have paid 1,600 for what should be around 800.
Good luck with your purchase, and I agree with the others that the deal is good if you feel it is. I would not wait to long though becasue they are selling better now with the warmer weather.
There are a lot of 2008s on dealers lots in NJ. You might want to price one out and compare the price to the 06 with 28K miles. There are some real bargans out there at this point. It's not a matter of convertibe season but rather that dealers have had these cars on their lots with GM sales down 49% last year. I'd also check back with the forum on the qualiity of coverage and price of the warranty package. Some of them are pretty poor on what is and isn't covered. Also take it to a corvette dealer for a check out.
You need to know that the GY runflats that are the OEM tires are $1200 to $1300 a set depending on where you get them. You also have some other choices - Firestone and Michelin (and probably some others) that can be more or less than the Goodyears. I have an 05 Z51 that came with the GY Supercar runflats and they lasted me about 25,000 miles ...I ran them down to the last 3/32ths. Because they were the only ones available at the time, I replaced these with a set of GY all-season runflats on a set of aftermarket wheels that I run on the car all year round (I am in Ohio). Last year, I also bought a set of non-runflat Michelin PS2s mounted on the OEM polished rims (that are lighter than the aftermarket rims I have) that I can drive to autocross and track day events.
The point of my post is that most non-Corvette folks are pretty shocked when they find out how much a set of tires costs for our cars..at least my wife was After checking around (Tire Rack, etc.) for prices, maybe you can use this information to negotiate a better price for the car or get them to replace your tires with a set of take-offs from another Vette.
As far as getting the car checked out, if you go to a Chevy dealer, they can input the VIN and tell you whether the car has had any TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) issued for it and whether the work has been done on it or not. The C6 is truly an amazing car that you can just drive and enjoy, take to the track or make a road trip and get 28 MPG. The more time you spend on the Forum, the more you will learn....it is truly a community and don't forget to Save the Wave!!
