Just a re-named Traction Control with a rev limiter?
Sounds like an advertizing/sales gimmick more than a Technical advance. Magazine testers are getting better 1/4 times with Launch control OFF.
Hardly. Which magazine testers would these be? While I suspect that a good driver, comfortable with the launch of a high torque rear wheel drive vehicle could equal or better the results, the real benefit of the launch control is for "everyman". Think about the great equalizer of the ability of a novice to get those same times. The algorithm in use allows the less than average driver to equal the times of one of GM's best test drivers. I'd say that is pretty technically advanced.

There was a slide that showed this and I didn't get it.
The computer monitors wheel spin and provides optimum power. Sort of like ABS in reverse. I'm just not sure that I'd use it other than at a drag strip. Would definitely be fun to try it a few times!

I recall the GM driver had a best time of 3.60 secs for zero to sixty without launch control. With the launch control on; zero to sixty was 3.65 for every pass all day long.

Got this though:

You can think of it as traction control but with an emphasis towards performance rather than just eliminating all wheel spin. I think the video explained the wheel spin stuff when they showed the graph. I don't think it's a gimmick, it's just another tool in the arsenal just like stability control, ABS, and the standard traction control.
