Default air conditioning drain

I used the air conditioning for the first time today and when I parked in my garage I could hear a ticking sound which then turned into a steaming sound. The a/c condensate drain is draining onto the exhaust and boiling off. Is this normal?

Yes, I think most of the cars do that. It's mentioned in the owner's manual too.

100% normal. Just think of it as your car's version of the water that condenses on your beer can on a hot, humid day (because that's exactly how the A/C does its thing )

It just seems strange that they would allow it to drain directly on the exhaust.

Yes, perfectly normal. One thing that you can do to minimize this is turn off the air conditioner but leave the fans on (press the snowflake button) for the last few miles of your trip. This will start to let the condensation evaporate. This will also go a long way to prevent mold growth which leads to eventual odor coming from the AC ducts after periods of inactivity.
