Engine Light and Transmission Issues

I have a 2006 C6 that I bought new back in '06. It's the base model with an automatic transimission and I've been having weird issues with the transmission. For the second time now, I've started up my car and I can't get the car to shift out of second gear. The check engine light will go on when this happens. So I pull over to the side of the road, shut the car off and open and close the door to reset all of the electronics. After then waiting a few moments I restart my car and it shifts gears no problem once again, but hte check engine light stays on. Has anyone else heard of this happening? Is there something I should be aware of to prevent this from happening again?

What codes are you getting? You can go to Advanced Auto Parts and they will read the codes off of the ODBII for you.

Without codes, it is difficult to really analyze the problem.

I'm a novice when it comes to cars. How do I find out what codes my car is giving me?

I just looked online and Advanced Auto Parts unfortunately doesn't have any stores in California. Does anyone know of a shop similar in Los Angeles that I could get my codes read?
