I had my son pull up as hard as he could while I messed around with the collar below the **** which was turned to the 1:00 position and dropped down.
Playing with the position of the collar while my son pulled, it finally let go. There was no resistance when the **** released once the collar was in the exact position. There are detailed instruction on this Forum, if I can find them, I will post.
When I changed out the console and boots on my 07 I was in a near homicidal state until a CF member pointed out that there is a plastic tie under the chrome ring that is not shown on the GM diagram. I cut it then followed the instruction to rotate the ring to the 1 o'clock and it came right off. I've mentioned this next part before. Prior to that, my neighbors were covering their children's ears and ushering them quick step into their homes. I didn't install a new tie and haven't missed it or the neighbors kids since completing the project.
Your profile states that you have a 2005 Corvette. If so you don't have a chrome trim ring to worry about. There is a C shaped clip that is inserted near the base of the shift **** on the side closest to the HVAC unit. You need to pry that C clip out with a small flat blade screwdriver. Once that is out you can pull the **** straight up. Once the **** is out of the way you can get the boot and console up over the shifter.

there is a small slit in shifter **** is that what you mean ,if so just dig out the clip???
WOW I actually got my C5 auto shifter converted to use the C6 auto shift ****...took a few days of frustration but next time ( if ever ) will be easier. I bought a complete used C6 shifter on the auction site and then purchased a used C5 auto shifter...tore the C6 one apart ( a real pain just use a dremmel and cut it up )...the C5 shifter came apart easily and then I just switched all the shifter lever parts from the C6 to the C5 shift lever....was a bear to remove the C6 **** and just as bad to replace it....THE SECRET is to rotate the boot mounting ring AND the shifter **** to the 1 oclock position,,,TURNING THE SHIFT **** TO THE 1 oclock position may NOT also turn the boot mounting ring at the same time.Lift up the boot and make certain that you turn the RING...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then pull on the **** with ALL your strength. Finish the actual install next week but the shifter works great on the bench. ( anyone need a complete C5 auto shifter..I have an extra one now )

I took mine off yesterday. Grab the boot just under the ****, there is a plastic housing under the fake leather. Twist it from 12 to 1 o’clock and push the housing down. Once it’s all the way down pull straight up on the ****.
