Crankshaft balancer TSB#05-06-01-001D .. Question??
Wondering if there is any update, how many cars are actually affected by now?
My car does not appear to be in the affected range of a 2005 build of a crankshaft balancer failure/loose bolt. My vin#55112745 (build date 12/04) and only cars built prior to VIN Breakpoint 55111039 should be affected according to TSB#05-06-01-001D.
My car has only 20K miles and I can tell my harmonic balancer is wobbling a little when engine is running, probably like 1/16. Not sure if this is normal or just beginning to come loose? Belt is fine, no noise etc.
If I need to change it, are there better aftermarket options or should I get OEM balancer?
Can anyone chim in? Thanks!!

I was hopping someone would help here.
This is what I know. From lot's of reading.
My 05 is in the range with 15K S/N 09008.
So far so good.
Crank shaft pin kits are available from Magnuson and from ARP.
There is a bolt that can be reused from ARP.
Also SLP performance parts has a Under drive pulley P/N 100225 for $199.95 you will need a new Dayco belt P/N 5060780.
Will someone add the links for the parts. Please!
Thanks Don

Never heard of an 05 that was out of the range have a problem with a "loose bolt." Zero to a certain amount of wobble is considered normal. There is no defined GE spec on allowable wobble. When the wobble starts to make your main belt chirp, then it's time to replace the pulley because the rubber flexible coupling of the harmonic balancer (pulley) is deformed.
Been there, done that.

With the rubber failing on the OEM parts with few miles.
I would lean towards the after market parts.
Here are some links for you to check out.

take it to another mechanic (preferably a trusted one) for a second opinion.

Mine started chirping at 19,000 miles. If it's not chirping don't worry about it. Apparently there are a lot of cars with pulleys that wobble. It's a fairly complicated job to replace it. Mine was done under warranty but I believe others have paid around $900 at a dealer to have it replaced and realigned.

If you do have a bolt that has been unscrewed by a slipping harmonic dampener, then you have two options. You could have your dealer apply the TSB band aid washer. Or you could do a proper fix and pin the dampener to the crank snout.

See if the links work now that they are on the Venders home page.
I could only find the parts in the catalogs.

Build date 10/04 and within the affected VIN range. In the middle of '05, heard chirping at around 40 MPH...below that nothing. Went for a spirited run of around 100 and came back home. Kept the car running and had the wife give it some gas. After walking around, noticed it came from the engine. Looked at the pulley and it was wobbling slightly.
Shut the car off, let it cool down and proceeded to unscrew the bolt with just my fingers...it was that loose and ready to come unscrewed!!!
Had it fixed under warranty and no problems since...fingers crossed.

ufso,
Sounds to me like you're home free.

Thanks guys! You should have read on here some of the horror stories back in '05.
The serpentine belt coming off and causing the engine to over heat and fighting with GM to give them extended warranties for their engines.
Throwing oil and rubber all over the engines compartment, damaging all the top of the engine...the stories go on and on!
Even now it's hard to imagine that a similiar problem is rearing it's ugly head again!
