Oh come on guys, don't you think the new emissions standards are a good idea? What's wrong with raising emission and CAFE reqirements, to 35.5 mpg by 2016, considering how well the domestic auto manufacturers are doing right now? Just because Chrysler is bankrupt and will now be run by the feds and the unions, with GM close on its heels, isn't now the perfect time to ask Detroit to raise emission and gas mileage standards? Who cares if they are barely surviving? Who cares if GM and Chrysler get bailout money, and are then asked to spend billions in R@D to meet new Federal standards? Who cares if this is another unfunded federal mandate to the states? Who cares if these new standards will potentially hurt our economy while doing little if anything for the environment? Shouldn't we all want to drive tinker toys with electric motors while setting our home and office thermostats at 80*? What's wrong with the proposed Cap and Trade laws? Haven't you figured out that the American people are apparently far too irresponsible and stupid to run their own lives without a Federal nanny watching over them? Obama's new green economy will save our country from economic ruin and environmental disaster. Look at how well these policies worked in Spain, the European country with the most severe economic problems currently. If the feds wanted to reduce emissions and break our addiction to foreign oil why aren't they pushing for natural gas vehicles, which is a much cleaner fuel source that we have plenty of?
I guess you think "Detroit" sits around and tries to figure out how to build inefficient cars. Not true. There are PLENTY of efficient cars from the domestics. I have a Ford Focus, with engine, tranny, and assembly from the USofA (actually, just a few miles away from where I live). I try to support the USA and my area and the people who are my neighbors. Perfectly good car for the money and I've had nearly 50K miles of issue free driving.
Some people don't trust the domestic car companies and would never buy their smaller cars. They prefer buy Honda, Toyota, Hundai, etc. My point is that the US car companies have quite a few options. Of course, anybody that wants to can come up with any number of reasons why they didn't buy the US car and bought the foreign car, but the point is that they exist. And there are plenty of examples to choose from, IMHO.
I see plenty of gas guzzlers made by the foreign autos that people are buying. They don't seem to get looked down upon for some reason.
As for foreign oil, I fail to understand why the US gov complains about this when in fact they seem to be intent on not letting any drilling happen in the US. Is this a plan to make the rest of the world run out of oil so that the US can hoard it? Because other than that, I don't understand how you stop the dependence unless you allow more domestic drilling.
If the feds wanted to break our addiction to foreign oil they could drill here in the US, we have more oil then all mid east, but that would put people to work.
