Getting to First.....
Have a 2009 C6, Z51,6 speed auto. How can I get the trans to shift all the way down to first when I put it in S at a stop? I do not want to paddle shift, just have S shift for me beginning in first. It defaults to 2nd normally. Can I get it into first and still have it shift itself through the gears? Thanks.

It will be in first all the time in s unless you use the paddles. If you use the paddles you will have to pull them towards you to start in first. Or just shift to d and back to s. Just driving in s and not using the paddles you will always be in first at a stop.

The A6 when in D will shift all the way down to first. When in S, unless you use the paddle shift, will shift all the way down to first. If at any point in the drive when you are in S and you use the paddles, the car will from that point on during that ignition cycle will only shift down to second until you use the paddles to go back to first. The other option is to shift to D or D and then back to S before you come to a stop.

As others here have indicated, your last statement is incorrect. If you've got it in S and never touch the paddles, it will ALWAYS downshift to 1st when you come to a complete stop.

Get on a street with no traffic and count how many times the engine rpms fall off and ramp up again as you slowly speed up to about 60. Hint, the rpms will drop off the first time at about 8 mph. That's when the tranny makes the first shift, from 1st gear to 2nd gear.
