Can anyone tell me if it is safe to drill into the small hump that separates the passenger compartment from the trunk area ??...(sorry I don't know any other way to explain it)

You'll need to be more specific. That area (directly behind each seat) houses the gas tanks. There are also a couple of hoses that run between the two tanks. Picture an arrangement that likes a saddle bag with the tank on either side behind the seat and the hoses between them.
Can't say completely that it is safe to drill because I don't know where you plan to drill nor how big of a drill you plan to use. You can do some damage if the drill is long or in the wrong location.
I haven't drilled...but someone has. The holes appear to be fairly small, maybe a 32d of an inch...like someone use a small sheet metal screw or something. What comes to mind is a drink holder installation or something like that. I was planning on putting some type of manual mount there and was checking out the area and found 3 small holes...then found corresponding holes in the carpet back. Made me curious.
The holes are centered in the area between the drivers seat and passenger seat. I am planning on sealing them up...need to make sure nothing behind was damaged but I have no idea if anything is in that area.
I was going to install one of those caddys that holds cups and a few knick knacks. I think I'll figure out something that doesn't require any drilling. Right now the car is in the shop otherwise I'd have posted some pic's. Hopefully I'll get it back next week sometime and may post some then.
My thoughts are that if any fuel or other lines were penetrated I would have an odor of some type.
From the depressions in the carpet, it appears that two rectangular objects about 6" apart measuring 1" x 3" were there. The only thing I could think of were those old cup holders. Dealers take everything out of a car so I just can't say for sure...???
Are those tanks pictured upside down ? How does the gas transfer from one to the other ?
They are right side up. The tank on the left of the picture is the driver's side tank and the tank to the right is the passenger side tank. That bright corrugated hose connecting them is the path for fuel transfer. Inside that pipe is a small pipe that connects between a fuel pickup in the passenger tank and a venturi pump in the driver tank. That's what transfers fuel from the passenger tank to the driver's tank. The latter also houses the primary fuel pump which draws fuel for the engine from a well in the driver's side tank. When the tanks are filling, after the driver side tank nearly fills, fuel starts to spill over to the passenger tank via the corrugated hose. That continues until both tanks are full.

yeah and it is almost never fast enough to get the auto fill pump to keep filling
I will do that...I promise. But I have to get the car back from the shop. The tranny blew on it last Friday so the dealership I bought it from is putting a new one in (no rebuilds). Hopefully I will get it back this week and I will take photos of exactly what I'm talking about.
If the holes are drilled the damage has already been done. I read a post where someone found screws in this area and they were fine until they removed the screws. The screw had actually gone into the gas tank, but did not lead as long as the screw was in the hole.
