Default Onstar question

I have not been able to find the answer to this. Since the 2009 Vettes have Bluetooth in them now, do you need to have Onstar active to use the bluetooth?

No. I never activated my onstar and use the bluetooth with my 3G iPhone every day.

Works fine

onstar has built in "cell phone" if you want to pay the high $ for the minutes, they claim it is better than your cell because the antenna is stronger, don't believe this nonsense...

The reason for my question is my renewal date is approaching and I can't see any sense in continuing it since I only use my cell phone threw the bluetooth. Haven't used the onstar in months

You will be fine without it. After about a dozen e-mail messages from my dealer telling me to hit the little blue button and activate my onstar I told them I didn't want it.

They then told me that I had to hit the little blue button to cancel it. I just called onstar's phone number to cancel. They told me it had not been activated so I never actually had the service.

I told them thank you anyway but I have NAV and a phone so I wouldn't need it.

Cell phone still works perfectly via bluetooth (as it had from day one).

No. Bluetooth is independent of OnStar.

You only need OnStar for;
  • Turn by Turn navigation
  • Airbag notification
  • Monthly vehicle status report (via e-mail)
  • On board phone usage
  • OnStar assistance, etc.

You may or may not like or want Onstar but their claim of better reception is true, at least in my Vet. I have in three locations have had no signal with my AT&T cell but got clear signal via Onstar. It's most likely due to different Carrier and towers but it's not fair to say their claims are total nonsense.

Just a counter view, not a challenge.

Actually Bluetooth works through the VCIM which is known as the onstar module. Bluetooth will however still work if you don't subscribe to onstar.

Basically saying if your onstar module fails you will not have Bluetooth.

I do not subscribe to OnStar because it's too expensive for me. However, FWIW, I did have it for awhile and used the phone and found it had MUCH better coverage than my regular cell phone.

Guess it depends where you are in the country, out here in the northeast there very few "dead spots" with hand held cell phones, unless you are in some buildings.... never could tell a difference between the car phone and the cell phone. just my opinion.

So, can you install an 09 Nav unit in an 05 and have bluetooth capability?

Well up here in the notheast "woods" we have quite a few dead spots where normal cells won't work but my Onstar phone will. Like my home for example. We don't have the most reliable landline company and lose service all too frequently. My only option then is my Onstar - and the reason I keep it.

Correct. Should have written: "Bluetooth is independant of OnStar subscription".
