My Z06 gets over 23 city and around 29 on the highway. I beat on it fairly hard and still get good mileage. I cant drive it as hard in the rain as I do in the dry so that should give you some idea of how I drive. But I am safe and dont endanger others.
All I can say after a trip from Ottawa to Toronto is "holy s**t!!!"
I got 720 kms (450 miles) out of my tank driving between 120kms to 140 kms/hr (75 to 87 mph) with the top up and the a/c running. On the way back I did 620 kms on the tank and still had a range of just over 200 kms to go. Unbelievable that a car that performs as well as the C6 can be this good on gas. Mind you city driving in an A6 is a whole other story but a guy has to burn a little fuel to have some fun!

ymmv.
really?? just what size city are you talking about
Thanks for all the responses. I have a 2006 C6 6speed. My average says 20-21 mpg but if you multiply 15.8 gallons times 20 you get 316miles. I know that's impossible but I was hoping to get around 240 miles. Am I just wishing now? Lol
Don't get too worked up about the range. It is calculated based on your most recent driving, and not on the average you see on the DIC. If you ride it hard before filling up, it might show the range as 200 miles after fill up. If you pull off the highway to fill up after a long run, it will most likely show you a range over 500 miles after the fill up.
So I filled it up on Thursday and I have put around 100 miles since then. It's still has about 70% left on it. I think it's running better actually. The computer must hve adjusted to the way I drive :0)
The 18 gallon capacity rating is BS. You'll find it's very hard to put more than 17 gallons in a C6. A LOW FUEL message will appear in the DIC when it wants you to think you'll run out of gas in ~42 miles. That's a fib, but there's no way to really be sure how much farther you can go because once that ding-dong goes off you can no longer bring up your fuel remaining fuel RANGE. I usually chicken out when a fill-up is about 16.5 gallons. I've never actually flamed out, but there was one time when I'd have sworn I was running on fumes and pumped 17.0 gallons.
And one thing I've learned the hard way is that when the gas pump kicks off while filling the tank, the tank is FULL! Do NOT try and squeeze in a little more to top off the tank or found up the dollar amount, or you'll be cleaning up the fuel that spills out off of your car.
The C6 has to have one of the most free-flowing filler pipes I think I've ever seen on a car (definitely better than the tank on my Prius - I sometimes have the feather that pump the whole time to keep it from kicking off while filling it - fortunately, the Prius only has an 11 gallon tank).
I am a happy camper. I filled up my tank two days ago and it was 258 miles. It wasnt even empty. Gas light was not even on yet. Im sure i had about 40+ extra miles.
No BS involved, sorry. The capacity is 18 gallons. The fuel pump sits so that it remains covered with fuel up until the last because it uses the fuel as a coolant. The system is calibrated to try to prevent you from running it bone dry and uncovering the fuel pump.
Thats the fact jack !!!!! If you have to put more than 17 gallons in, your really runing it low and pushing your luck !!!
You say you put 15.8 gallons in after 200 miles? That computes to 12.65+ mpg, which is not acceptable for a tuned LS2 being driven less than aggressively. It sounds like maybe you're not resetting the 'average' but are carrying it forward from tank to tank - maybe even from when you bought the car? Read the manual on how the mileage readouts in the DIC work. If you reset the mileage numbers when next you refill you'll get an accurate reading for YOUR driving style and history, eliminating that left over from the previous owner.
I regularly see 20 - 22 mpg driving back and forth to work in mixed driving environments ('06 Z51 'vert), and the highway mileage easily exceeds 27 mpg without overly gentle driving.
I note you figure gas mileage the same way my kids do - it could be a generational difference. My generation divides total miles driven by the number of gallons used, while it seems the younger folks compare the number of miles driven on a tank of gas. In my experience (I'm OLD) some cars had VERY LARGE tanks (24 gallons or more) and some very small (I fondly remember an old MGB that held about a thimble-full) so you really can't compare mileage by "tanks of gas". The big monsters that got horrible mileage had huge tanks, while the 'sippers' had small tanks. Maybe they were designed to allow you to go a comfortable distance on a tank of gas - lots in a behemoth and less in the economy models (one tired old memory cell keeps telling me a Corvette Stingray option ['63 - '67] was a 36-gal fuel tank).
Enjoy the ride, don't worry too much about mileage unless it indicates a performance problem, and smile, smile, smile as you drive it.
It'll eventually adjust and GM engines seem to get better gas mileage once they are broke in. Keep an eye on it because these cars are usually pretty effiient. A tank of gas for 200 miles is a joke unless you are beating the crap or racing it. That is barely over 11mpg.
