Default problem with shift **** install

2008 6mt. Hey i recently installed a Hurst OEM fit shift ****. When i removed the stock screw, it stripped. Had to use extractor to get it out. New screw supplied with **** was much longer. See pics. Do i have an aberrant/ weird setup? Are my threads out of spec? Did factory go overboard with loctite? ANy input helpful. I got the new screw in, but only 1/2 way and it stripped. Shift boot hides it. Now putting on new shift boot, i have 2 more screws from vendor to use. Will have to extract the one that is 1/2 way in it now.

this is the black short screw that was in my shifter/knobb from the factory. With extractor still attached!

the new screws are long enough to go all way across shifter and have more of a flush head. Have been assured that this is correct screw. No matter what i seem to put in there it strips on the way in or out. Should i get a shorter screw like this black oem one that was in my shifter? Is the screw included with the new **** truly the right one? Is my setup a one off?

I had something very similar happen when I tried to install a new shift ball on my 06. I don't know if the 06 setup is the same as the 08? I don't want to make your situation worse if they aren't the same.... I'm sure someone like Talon knows if they are attached the same way on those model years... If they are I can tell you how I fixed the problem with a quick trip to the local hardware store.... If the OP PM's me phone# I'll give you call with what I did to fix the problem...

I think we spoke about this and if that screw does not easily go all the way in (even without the ****) the threads are damaged or blocked. I have installed those screws on 15+ shifter personally and have a few hundred customers install them and never had this issue. If the new screws do not easily go in, you need to either shorten the screw or run a tap through the threads and fix them. Thread is Metric 18-8 M5 .8 mm Pitch

That's exactly what I had to do to get the screw properly installed....

All shifter use the same thread, the 08 and up (chrome ring) use a taper head screw and the 05-07 use a flat base screw with a washer. All shifter I have seen are threaded completely across but nothing says one fell through the cracks.

Mine was tapped all the way through only the threads simply didn't line up right. Only way to get the screw all the way through was to run a tap (very carefully) all the way through. That cleaned up the threads and then the screw would go all the in flush. Before doing that the screw would simply bind up and not go flush....

Son of Dreams thanks for your input, i appreciate your excellent service and sending me some replacement screws. Sounds like i need to get my threads re-tapped! WHy do i always have stuff like this happen? Makes me afraid to do more mods if i run into this kind of trouble with just the shift ****!
Again i am sorry if it came across as bashing, that was not my goal and i will give NakdiParts and Ed a HUGE thumbs up for being an aweosme vendor. I am just frustrated! How much simpler can a mod be than a SINGLE SCREW?!?! Nothing is ever simple for me!

thanks again for the info...i havent tapped since shop class in junior high. Should i take these specs 18-8 M5 .8 pitch and just have a guy at a machine shop do it? Might be worth the $10 as with my luck if i try it something bad is bound to happen!

No problem, the tap should be about $5 in any hardware store

Without a doubt it's some messed up threads and I doubt it was anything you did. I'm very careful to not cross thread things yet mine was messed up from the get go.... so it happens. Just get the tap and DIY it... Don't forget to buy the TAP HANDLE for the tap at the same time if you do it yourself. Good luck but it's a very easy fix....

As I mentioned in another thread, I really FUBARed my Nakidparts Hurst shift **** install on my '06 vert. Even after checking the alignment five damn times, I still cross threaded it AND sheared the screw head off.

I'll probably just buy the metric tap set (got the specific thread parameters from Son of Dreams; thanks for that, BTW). But where do I get a replacement screw and what do I ask for? And short of taking a drill to the hole in the shift handle, is there a better way of getting the bad screw out?

Thanks.
