I did not know this could happen so I will share with other unsuspecting members. Last night, I left the office late. Tired, and looking forward to my nightly appointment with Jack Daniel's, I tossed my key fob into my briefcase instead of my pocket as I hastily prepared to head for home. I opened the rear hatch of the car to deposit a package that had come in the mail and I also put my briefcase in before closing the hatch. Then, I could not open the doors or the rear hatch, despite the key fob being located within the car; in the cargo area.
So, beware! This bonehead found a way to blow $40 in cab fare (to get the spare key fob from home) and delay my most important appointment by an hour or so.
I always toss my briefcase (toss gently) into the passengers seat AFTER I get in the car. Good reminder. Just keep the darn FOB in your pocket is what I'm learning. Thanks for the heads-up.
Sorry for your mishap... this event (fob in hatch area, owner locked out) gets posted here about once/week!
Is it actually stated somewhere in the owner's manual that having your keys inside the car prevents the doors from locking? Seems like a lot of people are surprised that they actually can be locked out if they put the keys in the trunk and close the hatch.
At least you had a spare fob, even if it did cost you $40!

What do you mean "nothing happens"? Sure something happens. You get that little red light saying "Hey, Dummy! I know you want in but it ain't gonna' happen. You just locked yourself out."
The solution is to remember the line from Apocalypse Now, "Never get out of the boat." Just change that to "Never take it out of the pocket."
Sorry to hear that. Did you know that if you get someone one the phone with the other fob and you put you phone next to the car, the doors will unlock and you can get in. It works.

I did that too, but I left the key fob in my golf bag. Threw it in the trunk, closed the hatch, and went to open the driver door...it's a sinking feeling when you realize what you just did. Thankfully a call to OnStar bailed me out in minutes.
