Default Engine Oil Level

Hi

Where do you keep your oil level? 50 % or 75% or 100% of the fill indicator on the dip stick?

I am coming up on my first oil change and need a new rule of thumb for my new ride.

Thanks.

John

As long it is within the low and full mark. Of course full mark is best.

If you're referring to my post, I don't check the level every time I look at the Corvette.

Peace, out.

You dont go by the DIC? The DIC is supposed to tell you when the oil needs changing...

Top line on the dipstick. Thats 100%. Question: Have you ever done anything other than this for any of the other cars you have owned?

Oil is a coolant as well as a lubricant. I always keep the oil up to the "Full" line on the dip stick... to best serve both functions.

I go by the level the dip stick shows after I do an oil change. My car takes 10.5 quarts and I put in 10.5 quarts of oil when I change the oil. That is 100%, no matter what the dip stick shows.

To clarify, you said that you go by the dipstick, but then you said that you put in 10.5 quarts, no matter what the dipstick shows...so....this seems to be contradictory....does it matter what the dipstick says??

True, but that has nothing to do with oil level which is what the OP is asking. The dipstick is the only true way to determine engine oil level.

I think he means when he puts 10.5 quarts in it won't take any more because it starts running out the dipstick tube.
