Did anyone know that if you strip the paint off the inside of the factory C6
chrome wheels that under the paint the inside or barrel of the wheel is chrome. I stripped the paint off the inside of my '07 wheels and found chrome.
UPDATE Before and after pictures, 3rd set ive done. Reason the factory paints them is for slight defects in the chrome, id rather have the chrome.

If so- and not treated or sealed, it could rust- just like the surface of your rotors . . but an interesting discovery . . . .
I'd be interested in hearing from others more familiar with the process and manufacture . . .
Not really, the wheels are aluminum not cast iron like brake rotors; aluminum will oxidize but the coating forms a protective barrier against further oxidation; unlike iron rust.
No, I am talking about stripping that hideous ugly paint off of the back side or what some people call the barrel of the wheel. I used a product called "PEELER". It is made by Kleen Strip and comes in a aerosol can. I do about a quarter to a half of the wheel at a time. Spray it on the painted surface and almost immediately the paint bubbles up. Then I take a razor blade or small putty knife and peel it right off. I finish up with a Brillo or SOS pad. Finally I put a coat of wax on to protect. What you will find under the paint is a chrome finish. Not polished. Not bare aluminum.
Are you talking about the "inside" part of the wheel? You say the painted part of the chrome wheel? Please explain further, I am definitely interested.

He's talking about the barrel. It's the part on the inside of the spokes. On GM stock chrome wheels it is painted grey.
I heard about this on MSNBC. It's a specially developed iron based alloy for use in ALL the new, greener, post apoca...er, umm post bailout American made cars, trucks and pretty much everything. It's scientific name is 'Ferrous Ignoramous'. It's cheap and reflective and it's sweeping the nation! Ooooo, look, shiny things!!

I did my wheels yesterday then showed them to the guys in the club last night. I'm scheduled to do three sets this next week. It looks that great.
I agree. I tried this myself, with one of my front factory wheels with 00 steel wool and laquer thinner. I consulted GM techs about this. They said "maybe only with laquer thinner" as not to disturb the chrome. It is a slow process. I also used a scotch-brite pad after the laquer thinner had loosened the paint from the chrome as it helps the removal time some.
I'd be leery of the long lasting effects of the removal agents though. It can be done. I haven't had enough time to get them all done yet...
