Default Paddle shift question

Still 'learning' my new '08 A6 and can't figure something out. If I'm using the paddle shift, the 1 through 6 gears are prominently displayed on the dash UNLESS you switch the traction control to competition or off. The the display won't show which gear you're in, only showing 'traction control off' or 'competition'. Is there a way to override that so I can be in competition mode or traction control off and still see what gear I'm in?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

I don't think so. GM and their lawyers want you know all the time that you've got traction control off or competition mode on.

I think a few brave souls here with manual trannies came up with something to show what gear they're in, but I'd be reluctant to mess around with the car electronics much.

Do you have the HUD? If so, then you should see a gear selection display on the HUD while traction control off is displayed in the dash DIC (Driver Information Center).

For the first time, I just turned traction control off and used the paddles at the same time. I do have the HUD, so it displayed a continuous message in the DIC (not on the dash, that's misleading) that traction control was off, and also displayed the gears in the HUD.

No HUD, I'm guessing? Pressing the Reset button on the DIC should clear the TC or CDM message and return the DIC to the previous display.

p. 3-50 in the 08 owner's manual:

"RESET: Press this button, used along with the other
buttons, to reset system functions, select personal
options, and turn off or acknowledge messages on
the DIC."

If you do not have the hud and want your 1-6 displayed in dic again just hit the 2nd button or guage check button. That will get rid of the traction/comp dic display.

This is something I didn't know. I knew pressing any of the buttons clears the message but didn't know reset put up gears selection again. This forum is certainly a great resource.

If you've got HUD, the gear selection stays on display all the time. Warnings from the car display on the DIC.
