I recently purchased an 05 C6 and have noticed a slight steering looseness. The wheel will turn 1/4 to 1/2 inch before the steering engages. Is this normal? Also, can anything be done about the brake noise?
Not sure what car you are coming from and whether you had familiarity with Corvette steering. When I bought the C6 in '05 it was my first. I found the steering to be very light and somewhat disconnected (I was coming from an S2000 at the time). I still find it to be that way, although I know this has been improved in later years of the model. I am not sure if this is what you are experiencing.
As for the brakes, the best thing to do is get yourself some ceramics. I know there was a TSB on the Z51 version of the brakes where GM replaced them; however, there is no such TSB on the non-Z51 version. I had awful squeak in my non-Z51 version after about 1,000 miles. GM would do nothing claiming it is "normal". I went out and got some ceramic brakes and the noise has been gone ever since (it's been about 3 years now I guess). You will also have much less dust.
I don't know how many miles you have but in any event, make sure you get the steering bits inspected and tightened up if necessary. Tie rod ends and other stuff can get loose and worn. My 05 vert has 14k mi. and is definitely NOT loose.
The steering should be very tight and responsive, no matter what car you may have had before.
Have your front suspension and steering rack checked. This is NOT normal at all.
