Irritating Problem .. Short Version .. any ideas??
This is going to be hard to explain but here it goes. The short version.
After my battery died and leaked … car towed to dealer … defective battery replaced … got car home …
While in the garage and with just the car in acc and the radio on or off, there’s this high pitch sound coming from under the hood. It’s hard to hear and there is no way the Chevy service manager could hear the sound at their shop, just too much noise.
I had my wife come out in the garage and I asked her if she could hear the high pitch sound and she could.
The sound seems to be coming from below the engine but you really can’t tell.
Any ideas?
I know this is a lot to ask and my only hope is to find someone who has had the same problem .. With a fix.
My brakes had a squeaking problem so I took the car to the dealership and asked one of the guys there to drive with me to show him they were squeaking. Do the same thing ... pick somebody up at the dealership and drive them to a park or something and tell them to listen.
I've heard many noises coming from my '07 when I shut her down in the garage. High pitched sound from the dash, lots of HVAC valves moving a little here and there during the several minutes after shutdown. After several minutes on your's, this should all stop. If not, then something is remaining powered up and it needs to go back to the dealer so they can figure out what it is. The sound is most likely an electronic circuit that is oscillating at high frequency and you were lucky enough to hear it.
if your battery was leaking, the wiring underneath the battery box may be damaged and causing something to run after shutdown. have your dealer listen, and do a voltage drop test at the battery. if the battery is losing voltage, you have something running after shutdown. just sayin................
Is your radio turned all the way down? I know that when I pull into the garage (where XM doesn't work), I will hear a very faint "hissing-like" noise. It's the faint radio noise. Probably not your problem since yours eminates from under the engine area.
Thanks for all your help. I might try to get someone from the dealer to go with me and find a nice quiet place so they might hear the sound. It does sound like "an electronic circuit that is oscillating at high frequency" that (dgrant3830) suggested it might be.
It will make this sound if I just go out and turn acc with the engine cold. It's hard to hear, just irritating to me. Everything else seems to be working fine. It's been about 2 months since the battery replacement.
am I wrong; I thought when you power up "ACC"
you are in fact turning on some electrical circuits? if that's the case, something has to be working/running.
the question is: do you hear this sound when the engine/electrics are completely off? if not, I don't think you have a problem.
I have a high-pitched sound at exactly 2050 r.p.m. Whether engine speed is increasing or decreasing, at 2050 r.p.m. it's there and once the tach moves past 2050 the noise is gone. It turns out that the noise is coming from the alternator. According to the dealer, the alternator is otherwise functioning normally so I'm going to hold off on the $850 replacement.
We need to clarify whether this noise is heard when the engine is NOT running??? You said ACC....
The ballast on each headlight is a high voltage device and can definitely make a high pitched whine....every one will be different, some noisy and some not. But you would never be able to hear this if the engine were running.
So do you hear it with engine running, off, or both?

I never heard this sound before the battery died. It's with the engine off ... cold or hot, radio off and ACC on.
I don't seem to have any mechanical or electrical problems, just this sound that can be heard only in a quiet location.
With the engine running or radio on, you can't hear the sound.
What brought my attention to it was when I'm in the garage cleaning the car; I like to turn on the radio. I noticed as soon as I turn on ACC this high pitch sound starts (with everything else off).
If the headlights are on, then this would be my first guess. Easily ruled out if they are not on. The alternator will not make any noise if it is not spinning, so that can be ruled out.
With "ACC" on you are energizing a number of things. Everything but the engine infact.
that's what I thought, and posted. I don't know if it's everything, but close to it.
Ben, that you never heard it before, I don't know why. Maybe you just weren't listening for it, or there was too much ambient noise in the other instances.
