Default Engine/Trans Authentication

Looking at a used 06, how can I verify that the engine and trans are the ones that came in the car from the factory? The trans is manual.

Being an 06, you could check service history to see if anything has been replaced under warranty. Do you suspect a rebuild or some other shady thing? Carfax would tell you if there has been any insurance repairs done. Otherwise, I'm sure there is a way to cross the engine's serial number to the vin. I don't know how but maybe someone else does.

The engine "serial number" is the VIN number. I'm not sure exactly where it is located but I recall seeing it being on the top rear of the block but I could be wrong. I'm recalling it from watching it being etched on at the factory and the engine could have been rotated since it wasn't in the car yet.

As noted here often, Carfax may or may not tell you of prior significant damage to the car. It doesn't tell you anything about damage that was repaired without insurance being involved. Neither Carfax or the service history would tell you if someone had abused the car, blown up the engine, and replaced it themselves.

From the Service manual:

The vehicle identification number (VIN) plate is the legal identifier of the vehicle. The VIN plate is located on the upper LH corner of the instrument panel (I/P) and can be seen through the windshield from the outside of the vehicle.

The last five digits of the assembly plant sequential number are stamped onto the rear side of the front sill (tie bar). This number is the same as the last five digits on the VIN plate. The VIN plate also has bar code characteristics.

For the Engine:

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is located on the left side rear of the engine block (1) and is typically a nine digit number stamped or laser-etched onto the engine at the vehicle assembly plant.

The first digit identifies the division.
The second digit identifies the model year.
The third digit identifies the assembly plant.
The fourth through ninth digits are the last six digits of the VIN.

For the transmission, the serial number and ID are stamped on the bottom rear of the tranmission behind the pan. The translation is as follows:

(1) 5 = 2005
(2) Model
(3) Hydra-Matic 4L60-E
(4) Julian Date or Day of the Year
(5) Shift Built, A, B, J = First Shift; C, H, W = Second Shift
(6) Serial No.
(7) Transmission ID Location
