It's much more difficult to install a cage in a Z06. You can't just weld a steel cage to the aluminum frame - you have to bond some steel mounting plates to the aluminum so you can weld the cage in, then you have the possibility of dissimilar metal corrosion.
I believe that's why the Grand Sport was made with all the wide body Z06 stuff but with the steel frame - so it can be turned into a race car much easier, and the GS will probably be the future T1 Corvettes on the race track.
