I just put in Boston Acoustic S55 Speakers in their place. It's a PITA to access them. I decided to do it while I was doing a dynamat / madvette insulation install, hoping not to have to go back in there again.
There are varying opinions whether it's worth replacing them. I can't comment because I haven't gotten my car back together and listened to them yet.
To see what you need to do to access them, look at madvettes insulation install instructions: it breaks down how to get out the rear speaker panels.

Thanks - did a search but i couldnt find a post that specifically dealt with how to gain access to those speakers. It looks like just a few plastic pins PLUS then removing the rear window hydrolic arms which I'm not gonna do... could be a real pia!

Try this, take the fade control and move it about two notches (adjustments toward the rear - seat adjustment might affect the final setting) and it fills in the sound throughout the cabin. Worked great with my NAV Blose system.
I agree.. I ditched the center front speaker, and you set the rear up a couple, and turn up the volume... not as bad as it was... and I find it livable...
As long as we are on the subject of rear speakers, I wanted to access just one of them to hook up a sub. Do the speaker wires for the rear speakers travel under the sill plates? Anyone know the colors for the speakers?

Thanks, but no. I have a nice Dynaudio speaker set set up in the doors and I have to have a high quality set in the back. The blose have to go...
has anyone disconnected the hydrolic arms? I'm guessing its a pain but Ive never really looked into it...
Here is a link to the Madvette Insulation kit, the first post has a link to the instructions. The first half details getting the interior out. Based on my experience just doing it, you'd need to take out the the door sill panels, the trim panel at the rear of the doorway, and then the panel covering the speakers. All are snap out, except for two push pins on the halo, which connect to the speaker panel (be careful with these - they are $5 a piece).
