florida advice
Check out suburbs of miami (western areas of Broward county). The city and its comforts are a short drive away but you get the high-end lifestyle with little congestion or annoyances.

you really cant go wrong in this area

As to moving/buying, my advice is to come down and rent first. That lets you find out the details of different neighborhoods before making a commitment. Also, Florida property costs vary widely these days, as so many are being sold short or are distressed. You could save yourselft many tens of thousands by looking for the right deal.
If you are retiring, look at the Villages in Ocala. Middle of the state, away from storms and high insurance costs.

It gets to 110 out there, but it's a dry heat!!!! Yeah.....right!!

To the OP, I lived in Ft Lauderdale for 15 years, but escaped in 1997. Even back 12 years ago the place was getting overpopulated and overbuilt.
I lived in the Panhandle (Pensacola) for 3 years before that, and that area along the Gulf Coast from Ft Walton to Pensacola is very nice.
I've got a sister that lives in St Pete. There are a lot of beautiful areas over there, but I hate driving in that area. South of Tampa down to Sarasota has some very nice areas, and SW FL is nice in Ft Meyers/Naples areas.
You've got the East Coast from Jacksonville down to Stuart (just north of Palm Beach, where South Florida starts). You've got a huge area to look at.
Then you've got Central Florida with Orlando in the middle.
So.....when you say you're moving to Florida, you're talking about a HUGE area and everything from some of the most hick rural areas of the south to the most upscale high-roller glitzy scene of South Beach.
When I moved in the same state from Pensacola to Ft Lauderdale, we had to drive more than 650 miles from our old house to our new one.
Unless you have some connection to a particular part of the state with family, or you've lived here before, when you say you're moving to Florida, you've got to come down and spend a couple weeks driving around the whole place to figure out where you really want to live.
I like Daytona. Get a Harley and you'll enjoy Bike Week in March and Biketoberfest in October. We've got Speed Week (actually about 6 weeks!!) from January through March with the Rolex 24 road races and continuing right on through the Daytona 500 and motorcycle races during Bike Week. The Coke 400 runs July 4th. The Turkey Run car show (a HUGE event) goes down at Thanksiving. There are several HPDEs on the Rolex 24 course in the fall for you to run your car on the track (you can't run a vert in track events without a cage).
So....come on down, but you've got a very large area to select from with hugely different societal/cultural/development differences.

the suggestion by at least a couple of posters to go down and check out the area and figure out where you want to live, I think, is a good one. maybe even rent for awhile.
