Posted in newbee thread BMW 335I vs Corvette Z51
Hi all.
I have been reading this forum non stop from good old Iraq working as a contractor and have just purchased my very first 2007 Black C6 coupe MN6 Z51 3LT today from a Marine in the states. I knew from reading posts from you all that I could make an informed decision to purchase with out even test driving the beast. I will be picking it up Dec 14 2009 and cannot wait to experience heaven on wheels..I had purchased a 2007 BMW 335I Twin Turbo Black and it is fast. What can I expect out of this vette as far as launch and top end vs the BMW.
Look forward to many more good vette owners to meet and chat.
It is a buyers market and Corvettes rule!

Just like some opinions on the two together side by side and a fun run.

My wife was looking at the 335, and had one for a test drive day. Nice car, no two ways about it. But in regards to performance it will be a night and day difference for you. The vette has the ability to keep you pinned back in your seat for a much longer period of time than the BMW does--it's just a question of tremendous torque. When you open the can of whoopazz it is just a much bigger can in the vette. Until you feel it you really can't appreciate it. You've got a great thing to look forward to.
I came up on a 335 while driving on a twisty-turny stretch of road; I saw him look up in the rearview and then he suddenly began driving in a more spirited manner. I wonder why? I was impressed in the way his car stayed very neutral in the transfers, but I could just eat him up whenever I wanted. Simply a matter of cubic inches. The tighter the road course the less the advantage for the vette, but still I think a definite advantage. The gearing with the Z51 allows for much faster exits out of corners, and the horsepower advantage is just ridiculous on the straights.
Largely because of the tires the ride is less compliant in the vette. The steering in my 09 does not seem to be as exacting compared to the BMW. The BMW seats are more supportive. The vette feels bigger on the inside--more open and airy, but the hood bulges on the vette take some time getting used to. My wife wound up with another X3, but I would not have been at all sorry if she had a 335.
Stay safe and come back in one piece. Congrats on your car.

Excellent reply glacierbay2.
I had been driving a 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP (which I will keep for my daughter who is only 9)and it would handle like it was a go cart on rails. Then saw the 2007 BMW 335I w/Sports package Black with Terra Cota interior and 300HP 300LBS torque fully loaded for a steal at a Saturn dealership. The salesman had no idea what this BMW was about just stated it looked nice.Took that away quick with a low ball offer and he accepted. The BMW handles so good in and out of curves and straight line pull was hard.
Well the Vette is going to just blow this away(maybe it can keep up for a little) but he Vette experience will be unmatched on acceleration and thrill.

A friend of mine who owns a car repair shop got a 335 (also black with terra cotta interior) approx one year ago and immediately did a chip, tune, and exhaust upgrade. When I drove it, I was pretty impressed with the acceleration. I had previously owned an E39 with sports/luxury package and expected great handling and comfort out of the 335 and it delivered in that area also. Weight and all considered, I don't think it can beat the vette in a straight line or in the twisties, but the interior is a hell of a lot nicer. Enjoy your C6 - get ready to have some fun!

Ya I hear what you are saying.
Love the thrill that is legal to some degree but almost pushing right to the edge. The Vette is black and it just does something to you psyci that takes over. I drive like I own it put treat it like my second child.
Live life First, Family, Job, Friends in that order for me.

I own an '08 C6 and an '08 E90 335i and I love them both. A 335i with an intake and tuner (and a little 101) will hang with most stock vettes in a straight line. The 335 is deceptive when you are behind the wheel because the power delivery is very linear and smooth. I had a 535i before this 335 and both cars surprised a lot of people who didn't have any idea how much power the little inline 6 can make when you turn up the boost.
All that being said, my wife drives the 335 and I drive the vette....take that for what you will.

Ha sounds just like my wife.."its to fast...what is a cold air intake? you, gonna void the warranty!" and I just slow down for her but as soon as she gets to the house I always seem to forget something at the store and off I go in the B and have a perma grin the whole time. Hell I even pre plan and put stuff i know she is gonna ask for later in the car so I can drive and not even stop at the store...I think she plays along she knows I have fun but careful as well

Had a 07 335I, it's smooth and fast and a very different car than the corvette. Wasn't happy about the heat from the twin turbos which could melt the driveway. I liked the BMW a lot but, I love my 08 MT Z51 corvette. You have to drive them both to feel the difference.

Yep thats the way I see it too the vette is just going to be better at for what each are capable of without trying to push the limit. Both are great cars from G and USA. people like the side by side comparisons when they are close in what each one brings to the table. Some are purists and set without the ability to look for all angles that make you smile just a little more.

Someone already mentioned it, but perhaps people don't realize just how much power those things can put out with a new ECU program:
384 hp and 421 lb-ft from the Dinan chip...and they match the new car warranty coverage (up to 4 years/50K miles)!
Stock its only 300 hp.
Once that upgrade is done, the 335 WILL run with an LS2 Vette no problem..

Well then I just need to get that Dinan chip for the B. Anybody know the link and is it a mail in type ECM swap..as I live in Alabama and don't know of anybody that does this. I will go to the BMW forums as well.
Now back to the Vette talk.
Thanks all for the input.

335i: Seems like on avg, the most you can get on stock turbos are 450rwhp, but 400-420rwhp is considered the safe limit. They are getting above the 420rwhp using Meth/alky injection, race gas, and aggressive tuning. It seems the average with a max of 16psi w/o Meth and 93oct is 12.1-12.5s @ 115-118mph. With meth/race gas at 18-19psi the average is 11.8-11.9s @ 120-124mph (335i 4drs in the 120-121mph range, 335i 2drs in the 121-122mph range, and 1series are in the 123-124mph range).

$3k-$4k in parts on the 335i will get you those times.

I have a 2007 335xi sedan as my daily driver. Loved it since the day I picked it up. I am guessing that my new GS vert that I pick up this week will quickly outshine it however, haha.
One complaint about the xi version of the 335 is that it is VERY easy to slide the nose in corners while on the throttle. Makes sense since the front wheels are helping to pull the car, but very annoying on fast on-ramps. Assuming the vette won't suffer from that issue.

I recommend the JB3 chip for the 335. It is cheaper than the dinan with just as good, if not better power. check out modbargains.com. They have a lot of parts for bmw's at a reasonable price. Intake and JB3 ecu will transform your 335.

I have both a 06 Vette and a 2010 135i(close enough to the 335 to make a comparison. My Vette is pretty far from stock. At present its pumping out about 600bhp but I bought it new in 06. Had the 135 for a little over a month now and performance wise its cant touch a stock LS2 Corvette. Thats anywhere in the powerband. The Vette weighs a 150 lbs or thereabouts less, is way more aerodynamic and puts out 100 more hp and 100 ft lbs. The Vette also makes power all the way to redline where the N54 runs out of steam at about 5500rpm. The 335/135 series cars are really nice cars and the engine is a smooth power maker(winning the International Engine of the Year two years running) but its no match for the Corvette USA V8. I love both cars but for different reasons.

I saw one (335) at the drag strip a few weeks ago...running 11.5's@124-125 - I was impressed
